Heinz Soups With A Twist review

We seem to have gone from summer straight to winter this week so the slow cooker has come out of hibernation and we've been looking for comfort food. Whoever came up with Chicken Soup for the Soul certainly knew a thing or two. You can't get better comfort food than a delicious bowl of soup and a thick wedge of warm bread straight from the bread machine. Hmmm.

Well, Heinz have planned ahead and brought out a new range of "supercharged" soups that are perfect for the colder weather, taking the well-known and well-loved classics and adding a twist. The complete range is made up of four recipes : Cream of Tomato soup with Fiery Mexican Spices, Cream of Tomato soup with A Kick of Chilli, Cream of Chicken soup with Aromatic Thai Spices and Cream of Mushroom soup with Wild Porcini Mushrooms

The first thing to say is that you are never going to get a tin of soup that is as good as fresh or homemade soup. However, as far as tinned soup goes, I have to say they're not bad at all. Although I always add a sprinkling of herbs and spices and sometimes cheese to the top of my soup anyway, whether or not it comes out of a tin !

I had the Cream of Chicken soup with Aromatic Thai Spices last night and it hit the spot perfectly. It didn't have any big chunks of chicken but did have a lovely creamy, meaty taste that was both warming and satisfying. The Thai spices gave it a slight lift without overpowering the lovely classic taste that you would expect from a tin of soup.

A 1/2 can serving of the chicken soup contains 130 calories, 6.9g of fat (of which saturates 1g), 13.7g of carbs (of which 2.5g sugars), 0.2g of fibre, 3.2g of protein and 1.1g of salt.

If you want a quick lunch or light dinner, they're ultra convenient and quick. They are also ideal when used as the base for a more complex dish, for example adding extra leftover cooked chicken and sweetcorn for a chunky soup, or for adding instant flavour and creaminess for a variety of dishes including risotto, casseroles and curries.
