Kids' DVD review : Alpha and Omega 2 : A Howl-iday Adventure

The weather has been absolutely abysmal today - freezing cold, quite gusty and torrential downpours - so there was no way we were going to play outside. It was a perfect day to settle down after school and watch a cute family DVD. Alpha and Omega 2 : A Howl-iday Adventure fit the bill perfectly.

The first Alpha and Omega adventure introduced us to the characters of Kate (voiced by Hayden Panettiere) and Humphrey (Justin Long), two young wolves from a Canadian National Park who end up being thrown together, miles away from home, on an epic road journey back to their territory. They may be at opposite ends of the pecking order but romance blossoms between them.

In this second animation, we rediscover Kate and Humphrey who have obviously been busy because we also meet their three cubs, Stinky, Claudette and Runt. Who came up with those names ?! They are happily preparing to celebrate their first Christmas together but it all goes pear-shaped when the smallest cub, Runt, mysteriously disappears. In an adventure reminiscent of the first film, they have to go on a journey across the wilderness to find him and bring him back before the winter festivities begin at home.

It's a lovely heart-warming tale with plenty of excitement and funny moments and the kids really liked the animal characters. I did think it was a bit short at 45 minutes but this might suit younger viewers better than a full-length feature. There is also a double-bill DVD available featuring both of the films with a runtime of 85 minutes.
