This Sunday is Remembrance Sunday or Poppy Day, a day to remember the men and women who gave their lives in the two World Wars and subsequent conflicts. In many parts of the world, people observe a two-minute silence at 11am on 11th November, which marked the end of World War One. In France, where you can visit the extremely moving Commonwealth war cemeteries filled with row upon row of pristine white crosses, it's a bank holiday and all the flags are put at half mast. In the UK, the Royal British Legion are probably best known for their Poppy Appeal, selling the symbolic paper poppies in the run up to Remembrance Sunday, but they do a whole lot more than that. This year, they're aiming to raise £37 million to carry out their vital work, providing much needed support for the Armed Forces and their families, and buying poppies isn't the only way you can help.
They also have a range of funky gifts that you can buy from their Poppy Shop, including clothing, iphone cases, stationery and beautiful crystal jewellery. They also have a range of calendars and family planners available, and they sent us through "A Very British Family Organiser" to see what we'd think.
The illustrations really appealed to the kids. As the name suggests, it features some very typically British moments, from Halloween, Valentines Day and Christmas, to May Day, summer barbecues and having fun in the rain ! The planner has been specially designed for the Royal British Legion and each picture features poppies, which the kids had great fun trying to spot - some are easier than others !
The month-by-month planner has plenty of space for jotting down important events and appointments, with enough space for 4 family members. It's a really cheerful planner which will brighten up any kitchen or office wall. You'll be helping a great cause by buying one (or several - they'd make a great Christmas gift) too.
