Book review : Make Your Own Woodland Creatures - Clare Youngs

Sophie was delighted when we received a crafty book, Make Your Own Woodland Animals, to review. She immediately put herself forward as chief tester of the day !

The front of the book contains five of the 3d models, ready for you to press out and slot together.

This is a great introduction to how it all works and within seconds, Sophie was well on the way to finishing her first animal.

Here's her first creation - this rather cute hedgehog.

He was soon joined by his equally cute friends - a squirrel, a raccoon, some birds and a badger which was put together just after I took this photo. They really remind me of some 3d puzzle animals that I had as a child called Jiganimals, where I used to love swapping the heads and legs over and making random mismatched animals. I might suggest that next time she gets the book out.

In total, the book contains 35 animals for you to make, with templates for the ones that aren't given as press-outs at the front of the book.

We have some coloured card in our crafting cupboard but will also look at sticking wrapping paper offcuts or maybe recycled magazine pages on to card to get some really funky designs.

Sophie also said it would be cool to make two of each animal so that Pierre could play at Noah's Ark with them !

The models are so quick to put together with a simple slotting technique that even quite young children would manage to create them without too much help. It's a lovely activity for a rainy afternoon.
