Picture book review : Do You Speak English, Moon? - Francesca Simon & Ben Cort

Do You Speak English, Moon? is a lovely hard-backed picture book by Francesca Simon & Ben Cort. Both of those names may well be familiar to you. Francesca is the author of Horrid Henry and Ben is the illustrator of Aliens Love Underpants.

The story starts off with a little boy talking to the moon, wondering if he is lonely and what he can see from his place high in the sky.

This leads to a lot of imaginative questions that only a young child could (and frequently does) come up with - does he have a bouncy bed? like chocolate ice cream? pretend to be a crocodile or play pirates?! It's a lovely enchanting look into the way a child's mind works, full of innocent questions.

The fabulous double-paged illustrations are teeming with details. Pierre and Juliette love looking at all the different children in each one to see what they're doing, so - even if the texts are very short - it always takes quite some time to look through the book and satisfy their curiosity ! We also like the page that introduces the idea of the constellations and gives a few names of the different star formations.

And it finishes with a really heart-warming moment with the sweet little boy telling the moon that if he feels lonely, he can talk to him whenever he wants. This has led on to some lovely conversations with the Madhouse Mini-testers about what makes a good friend, what you can do to cheer people up and what to do when you feel sad.
