Ferdia Milk Chocolate Salted Caramels review

While awaiting the ferry this afternoon, I spied a bag of Milk Chocolate Salted Caramels from Ferdia Luxury Irish Chocolate peeking out of the top of our Christmas hamper. It's a company that I'd never heard of so I went to do a bit of investigating and learnt on their website that they are a tiny company, employing 17 people including master chocolatier Bryan Mc Namee who has been with them since the very start in 2004 and that they make their chocolate by hand in Ardee, Co. Louth.

Having not really looked at the packaging, I was suprised when I ripped open the bag - the chocolate and caramel are enclosed in rather special looking silver balls, making them perfect for fitting in with the festive decor. They'd also look great on the table for special occasions like weddings or christenings.

The chocolate is smooth and creamy and the caramel centre is liquid and gooey, so you have to shove the whole thing in your mouth in one go for a totally moreish and indulgent chocolate hit ! The subtle salty background note takes the edge off what could otherwise be a slightly sickly, overly sweet treat.

We shared the whole bag out between four of us and had three each so the 120g bag contains 12 chocolates. Each 10g ball contains 47 calories, 5.2g of carbs (of which 4g sugars) and 2.7g of fat (of which 1.7g saturates). The ingredients list shows 40% minimum cocoa solids.

If you imagine a more upmarket, sophisticated version of a caramel keg with real wow-factor in terms of visual appeal, that will give you a rough idea of what you get for your money ! Very nice indeed.
