Do you know the way to St ... Albans ?!

My cousin went to college in St Albans and we helped her settle in so I have memories of a quaint market town with a real olde-worlde feel. That was back in the nineties though so I bet it's changed a fair bit since then !

From ancient Rome to a modern-day hub: Life in St Albans

The beautiful Cathedral city of St Albans in southern Hertfordshire is a place with a rich history and stunning architecture. Its medieval past is steeped in battles, Roman settlements and millinery – its present is a vibrant, affluent hub with a thriving economy and a rich cultural existence.

Situated 19 miles north of central London, St Albans is a highly desirable postcode, offering leafy green parks, beautiful countryside and an easy commute to the capital. It’s the perfect place to raise a family with a number of high achieving schools in the area, both state and private, and a lot of green and open space to enjoy.

The housing market is buoyant and properties tend not to stay on the market for long, however look around the area and there are bargains to be found. The city has a diverse selection of houses with Victorian terraces, modern family homes, flats in converted properties and new build apartments.

Shopping

When you have found the right home, the city offers everything you could ask for, with bars, restaurants and trendy little independent coffee shops all nestled in a picturesque and historic setting. St Albans is a fantastic place to shop and as you might expect from a city with a strong history and individuality it boasts a large number of independent stores. It also has its own street market selling unique items you won’t find anywhere else.

St Albans has loads of attractions with museums such as the Verulamium Museum and the museum of St Albans. There are also a number of National Trust stately homes as well as the beautiful Verulamium Park set in 100 acres of wooded parkland close to the city centre.

Things to do

The city has a number of impressive pubs and inns and is the home of CAMRA, or the campaign for real ale. For the more high-end cultural activities there are a number of theatres including the Alban Arena and the Maltings Arts Theatre where you will find everything from dance to opera.

St Albans is also a great place to get fit with four public sports and leisure centres. In addition, there are a number of outdoor parks popular with joggers and plenty of opportunities for people of all ages to get involved with sport.
