Nothing But snacks review

We love trying out new foodie treats here at The Madhouse and the concept of Nothing But really appealed to me - "A different and exciting way to eat 1 of your 5 a day portions of vegetables. Great for on the go or as an alternative to a baked or fried snack!" On the outside, they look just like a bag of crisps.

On the inside, there is no mistaking the fact that they are packed full of vegetable goodness though. The first variety was Mange Tout and Red Pepper. The vegetable pieces are freeze dried so they retain their colour and shape - as it says on the pack, "all we do is cut them up, take out the water and seal them in a bag". Well, I wanted everyone to love these but unfortunately, the kids weren't too keen. The red pepper pieces were deemed "ok" but the mange tout didn't meet their approval, which is surprising because they like them fresh. I had a taste and the flavour of the mange tout is stronger than when they're fresh so they taste more like cabbage or sprouts than the more delicate mange tout flavour.

OK, let's try the other bag containing Parsnip and Beetroot. These ones got slightly more positive feedback. Juliette loved the parsnip ones, which are mild and sweet, as you'd expect, but wasn't keen on the beetroot. Pierre didn't like either and Sophie thought they were both nice.

They may well be a flavour that grows on you though so I'll put some in a dish with some dips next time so see if that helps. If you leave them hanging around in an open bag, they will go soggy though so don't open them too far in advance. Overall, the kids weren't keen but the adults gave less harsh criticism, presumably because we could see the health benefits.

There is also a third variety available - Pea & Sweetcorn - which I think would really appeal to the kids so I'll be looking out for those

Each green pack (red pepper and mange tout) contains a mere 26 calories (compared to about 150 in a regular bag of crisps), 0.2g of fat and 3g of sugars and the purple bag (beetroot and parsnip) contains 36 calories, 0.12g of fat and 5g of sugars. These would be great in lunchboxes or for snacks on the go and they're so much healthier than many of the snack options out there.
