Tesco Finest Hot Cross Buns review

Tesco recently won the Good Housekeeping Hot Cross Bun tasting with their finest* 4 Hot Cross Buns, which are on sale for £1.70. The judges were impressed by their “beautiful rounded shape, soft juicy fruit and just the right amount of spice.” Scoring 78/100, these hot cross buns beat rivals including Waitrose Fruit & Oat Hot Cross Buns, £1.69 for 4, which scored 65/100, and Heston’s Honey and Ginger Hot Cross Buns, £1.69 for 2, which scored 58/100. Tesco sent us through some vouchers so that we could try them out for ourselves.

Fresh from the pack, they have a lovely soft, squishy and sticky texture. The Good Housekeeping testers loved the "beautiful rounded shape" whereas I was won over by the fact that the buns and the crosses on top are slightly imperfect and irregular, making them look homemade rather than mass-produced.

I split one in half and was impressed by the quantity of dried fruit but also the softness and juiciness of the raisins. No dried out, rock hard currants in here !

Slathered with salty butter, they are delicious. You can taste the spices coming through but it's not overpowering. They're perfect for elevenses - in fact, I think I may have to have one for breakfast this morning !

Tesco were also absolutely delighted to win the coveted Good Housekeeping Easter Egg of the Year award for the second year running with their finest* Medley of Belgian Chocolate Easter Eggs. With a score of 88/100, the £25 egg topped the tasting and beat luxury rivals such as the £24.95 Harrods Lattice Egg, which scored 79/100, and the £45 Rococco Milk & Dark Egg which scored 78/100. Good Housekeeping Consumer Director Caroline Bloor said: “You're as likely to find a delicious Easter treat in the supermarket as you are in the luxury shops.” There's a good message there for food snobs !

What wowed the judges was visual appeal as well as taste. They described it as “beautifully presented nesting half eggs in a decorative wooden box. The mixture of white, milk and dark chocolate along with
butterscotch, raspberry, hazelnuts and coconut pieces means there is something for everyone to enjoy.” Sounds delicious - unfortunately, I couldn't find one instore when we went to look so they'd obviously all been snapped up !
