This #worldbookday, send your unwanted books to Africa

17 years ago UNESCO designated World Book Day as a worldwide celebration of books and reading. In the run up to this year’s World Book Day, this Thursday 6th March, non-profit-making charity Promoting Global Learning has unveiled a new online film. It aims to raise awareness of the huge need for books in schools in parts of Africa where more than 90% of children who attend school have never owned a book and encourages the public to offer their unwanted books to equip needy schools in Africa.

In the online film, British children talk about their favourite book and how it feels knowing that many children in African schools have no books. When asked what can be done, their answer is simple: collect books and send them to Africa – which is exactly what Promoting Global Learning is doing!

Did you know, in a recent study in Ghana:
· Only 23% of the English text books and 20% of the Maths text books were available in Primary Schools
· None of the Kindergarden schools have recreational equipment or facilities
· Teachers use a ‘chalk-and-talk’ method of teaching a class of up to 60 pupils, yet only 78% of schools have a blackboard and less than 50% of the schools have chalk!

Promoting Global Learning’s aim is to encourage children from Kindergarten to Secondary school to explore the pleasures of books and reading by providing them with the opportunity to have a book of their own – but they need your help to make a difference. To get involved, all you need to do is contact the charity and they will collect the books from you and deliver them to the most needy parts of Africa - it’s that simple. To offer your books simply contact Sue Gerrish at Promoting Global Learning by emailing info@promotinggloballearning.org or calling 0800 195 7522.
