Kids app review : Dinosaur Roar

This week saw the release of a new dinosaur-themed kids' app called Dinosaur Roar and we were delighted to receive a code to try it out. The app is inspired by the best-selling picture book, Dinosaur Roar! by Paul and Henrietta Stickland, and uses Paul Stickland’s original designs and Henrietta Stickland’s wonderful rhyming text. There is a special 20th anniversary edition re-launch of the book in shops now.

The app is aimed at 2-4 year olds and incorporates three different activities.

The first activity that we discovered was the fun Dinosaur Name Maker - after typing in your child's name, shaking the ipad will create a funny dinosaur take on it. Pierre loved the names it came up with for him, including Pierre-asaurus and Pierre-odocus.

The second activity is the interactive story. You can choose three modes - read aloud, read to me or record - and as you scroll through the different pages, looking at the brightly coloured pictures, you can click on the dinosaurs to make them stomp, shuffle, run, chomp, blink, squeak and roar their way across the screen.

For colouring fun, you simply select your favourite dinosaur from the menu, then using your fingers to add colours and patterns, you can recreate the original, or be as creative and colourful as you like. Pierre loves the "magic crayon" as he calls it, which colours in the shading, patterns and colours of the original illustrations from the book.

Sara Oldham, Editor of Pre-School Titles, Immediate, said: “I'm a huge fan of the Dinosaur Roar! picture book, which has been delighting children for 20 years. It has been a real privilege to work with the book's illustrator, Paul Stickland, to bring his beautiful paintings to life. We're sure young fans will be thrilled to have this playful family of dinosaurs at their fingertips. And with educational benefits that include reading, writing, creativity, co-ordination, maths and emotional learning, we're sure parents will love it too."

Pierre really likes the colouring activity and there are quite a few pictures available so it should keep him busy for quite some time. The dinosaur name creator is fun but has limited options and the story is fun to read, although I'm not sure how many times he will want to use it before losing interest.

The classic picture book Dinosaur Roar! by Paul and Henrietta Stickland, was first published in the UK in 1994 and has become a publishing phenomenon, with sales of more than five million books worldwide. As this iconic children’s title marks its 20th anniversary, owners Nurture Rights have appointed Penguin Random House as the new publishers, and have also teamed up with the Natural History Museum to develop and market the Dinosaur Roar! brand. Dinosaur Roar! is the inspiration for a major new project for pre-schoolers being developed by Nurture Rights, in association with the Natural History Museum, with a percentage of royalties from sales of the app going to support the work of the museum.

To celebrate the launch of the brand new Dinosaur Roar! App,there is a fun competition looking for the nation’s fiercest roar. Parents everywhere can enter their child to win an iPad Mini, lots of Dinosaur Roar! goodies, and the chance to feature on the app by recording a short video of their child letting out a ferocious dinosaur roar and sharing the clip. They’re looking for the loudest, squeakiest, fiercest, grumpiest, longest, dinosaur roar, as judged by Paul Stickland. You can enter on Facebook, twitter @DinosaurRoar or by email (roar@dinosaurroar.com). The closing date is 7th June 2014. (Available to UK entrants only.
Prize: 1 x iPad Mini (WiFi only), 1 x Dinosaur Roar! bag, 1 x Jumbo Floor Puzzle, 1 x 4-in-1 Puzzle, 1 x Memory Card Game, recording session for winning child to feature on next App update)
