Picture book review :Cantankerous King Colin - Phil Allcock

Along with Hocus Pocus Diplodocus which I reviewed earlier in the week, Maverick kindly sent us through a copy of Cantankerous King Colin, a title which already made us laugh because the Madhouse Family have an uncle called Colin.

King Colin is not only a spoilt brat, he's also rather silly, doing all manner of often unpleasant things just because he's the king so he can do what he wants. He eats lettuce with cold gravy just because he can.

He rides his horse through a field of cabbages, just because he can.

He throws a tantrum when his horse isn't ready, even though nobody knew he wanted to rise (as his much more level-headed and reasonable offspring point out). (Pierre had a giggle at the pile of horse poo !)

It's a good way of getting kids to point out all the naughty things he does and why they're bad - Pierre quite rightly said that it isn't nice to walk up the stairs without wiping his feet or taking off his muddy boots because someone has to clean up after him. I may have to give this book a mention the next time he does exactly that !

We love the twist at the end - he may be a king but he still gets put in his place by his mum, who is also a queen so she can do whatever she wants too and sends him to his room. This made Pierre laugh !

It's a fun book to read together and the big, brightly-coloured illustrations really bring it to life.
