Book review : An Evil Mind - Chris Carter

When a review copy of Chris Carter's newest novel, An Evil Mind, plopped on my door mat, I rubbed my hands in glee, knowing that I'd be in for a few sleepless nights as I'd read way past my bedtime, desperate to get to the end and uncover the deliciously macabre twists and turns that Chris Carter handles so masterfully.

The book is Carter's sixth thriller and also the sixth featuring Detective Robert Hunter. In this episode, Hunter is about to head off on a well-deserved holiday in Hawaii after hunting down another psychotic serial killer, but it isn't to be. After a freak accident in the rural backwaters of America, the FBI have uncovered a suspected double murderer and he's only willing to speak to Hunter.

Hunter is an expert in criminal psychology and has used his talents many times to track down ruthless serial killers. This time, the suspect is already in custody, which should make his job a lot easier, but Lucian Folter promises to be Hunter's toughest case so far. Knowing Hunter personally from his past - they went to college together - the killer can seriously get under his skin, manipulating every little chink in Hunter's armour and playing twisted mindgames with him. He reminded me of a carbon copy of Hannibal Lecter, which meant that I could almost hear Anthony Hopkins musing about fava beans and chianti and doing that spine-tingling sucking noise every time he spoke. Carter manages to come up with a whole new catalogue of warped and twisted crimes though so you'll still be on the edge of your seat, marvelling at the depths of Folter's depravity.

Despite having read several novels featuring Detective Hunter, I never really had the feeling that I knew much about him - the serial killers always have the starring role in Carter's works. In this book, thanks to Folter's loaded questions, we get to find out a lot more about the detective's past and his personality. It's a chilling, dark, terrifying read that will have you glued to the pages, in awe of the sheer evil and perversion that Carter can conjure up.

Whether you're already a Chris Carter fan or you've yet to discover his writing, An Evil Mind is a great read. It could be just the thing to provide a refreshing chill down your spine when sunning yourself on the beach or by the pool this summer !
