Book review : The Man Who Filmed Nessie (Tim Dinsdale and the Enigma of Loch Ness) - Angus Dinsdale

The Man Who Filmed Nessie is a fascinating glimpse into the life of Tim Dinsdale, who embarked on an amazing 57 Nessie-hunting expeditions over a whopping 27 years from the 1960's to the eighties.

The first thing that should be noted is that this is a book about The Man Who Filmed Nessie, not the monster itself. Although the two are intrinsically linked, if you've come to it hoping to learn more about the enigmatic beast lurking in the depths of the Scottish loch, you may be slightly peeved by the first few chapters dealing with his childhood and early life before he had even heard of the monster. That said, he had a rather colourful childhood, including an episode in Imperial China where he was kidnapped by pirates on the high seas, no less !

The book is written by Angus Dinsdale, Tim's son, who accompanied his father on some of the monster hunts and who also includes extracts from his late father's diaries, as well as numerous personal photographs. While Angus, like his father, is keen to present the scientific facts rather than an over-optimistic retelling of what-might-have-beens, Angus clearly loved his father and greatly repsected his efforts so this inevitably colours the writing slightly.

The book explains the evolution of Loch Ness Monster hunting, from the early days when Tim was basically on his own, through its heyday when an enthusiastic group of hunters used more and more complex and innovative equipment to try to uncover the secrets of the loch's depths. Tim interviewed numerous people who had had sightings and close encounters, and he even had some incredible experiences himself, but the monster ultimately remains as enigmatic and unfathomable as on the very first day that Tim set out on the long and lonely drive to Scotland to see what he could find.
