Kids' DVD review : Legends of Oz - Dorothy's Return

The Wizard of Oz has been done and redone so many times in different ways that most people already have their favourite version - from the original 1939 classic film starring Judy Garland, to the musical film The Wiz starring Diana Ross as Dorothy and Michael Jackson as the scarecrow, even on to Tom & Jerry in a cartoon version, to name but a few.

Released yesterday on DVD and Blu-Ray, Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return brings the classic story right up to date in a 3D-animated musical version. It picks up where the classic tale left off, with Dorothy arriving back home in Kansas, only to be whisked back to Oz to save her friends the Scarecrow, the Lion and the Tin Man from a new villain, the Jester, the evil brother of the Wicked Witch of the West, who wants to take over Oz.

As well as helping out her old friends, Dorothy meets new ones along the way - Wiser the owl, Marshal Mallow (a marshmallow law enforcer), China Princess (a china doll) and Tugg the tugboat. The merry band must journey through the colourful landscape of Oz to help Dorothy's friends and restore order and happiness to Emerald City.

Legends of Oz has a star-studded cast featuring Lea Michele (TV’s Glee, New Year’s Eve), Hugh Dancy (Ella Enchanted, TV’s Hannibal), Kelsey Grammer (Toy Story 2, TV’s Frasier), Patrick Stewart (X-Men: Days of Future Past, TV’s American Dad) and Brian Blessed (Star Wars: Episode I, Flash Gordon), as well as songs from Academy Award nominated singer/songwriter Bryan Adams.

It will appeal to tweens and teens who are fans of Glee, as well as younger viewers who will be won over by the colourful landscapes, cheerful message and boppy songs. Even as a grown-up, I loved the idea of a continuation of the traditional Wizard of Oz story, so it was perfect family viewing for a cold Sunday afternoon.
