ASDA Witches Hat Cake Pop Kit review

I love the idea of cake pops  - half cake, half lollipop - but somehow I can never manage to pull them off. They always fall apart at the crucial moment ! When ASDA sent me through a Halloween-themed Witches Hat Cake Pop Kit, I was keen to see if it would be any more successful.

Inside the box, you get a bag of biscuit crumbs, a bag of chocolate buttons, some mini ice cream cones, some white chocolate stars and some sticks. The box cleverly transforms into a cakepop stand which works well, but it does make it hard to read the instructions on the side of the box halfway through !

I melted some butter in the microwave then Pierre stirred in the biscuit crumbs.

You use this mixture to press into the cones, leaving some of it sticking out of the top to shape them into witches hats.

So far so good. Or maybe not. I pushed the sticks in and put them in the stand so they'd firm up but before I even moved them to the fridge, bits started to fall off. Aah it's the curse of the cake pops ! I found a quick fix though - I just put them in a bowl upside down in the fridge to set, which worked perfectly.

Once they've gone firm, you melt the chocolate and use it to coat them, then stick on the little white chocolate stars.

The chocolate sets surprisingly quickly so you need to work fast, but Pierre did a great job.

Given that these were done by a 5-year-old, I was really impressed. I'm sure you could get a smoother finish on the chocolate but they were good enough for us !

After all his hard work, Pierre got to lick the bowl out !

The proof of the pudding is in the eating and these were declared totally delicious.

Juliette was very impressed and asked how we'd made them ! They'd be great for Halloween parties or for handing out to little trick or treaters. At only £1.50 for a kit which makes 6, you could buy several boxes and make loads.

ASDA also have a whole range of Halloween-themed goodies hiting the shelves very soon. We received a selection of sweeties, make up and rather funky red eyelashes. Look out for their brand-new-from-America inflatable angel wings too - they come in kid and adult sizes and would look fab for Halloween fancy dress parties or trick or treating !

Disclosure : We received the products in order to right an honest review.
