Drumond Park's Shout! review

We've reviewed so many fab family games from Drumond Park in the past that we were delighted to be selected as one of a handful of people who were given the chance to review their brand new game Shout! early, before it even hit the shops. The official consumer launch is on 3rd November but some stockists have put it out on their shelves already, so if you like the look of it, you can buy it now !

Now, I have to admit, I was bit confused when I looked at the instructions for putting the game together.

But 13-year-old Sophie rolled her eyes at me and in seconds had put it all together ! The game’s centrepiece is the unique 60-second timer stand which displays the giant Challenge Cards to the ‘Answerers’ and enables the ‘Askers’ to see the answers to each challenge

There are 167 double-sided super-size cards in the box, each one featuring a set of nine Challenges on both sides (themed images, words, figures etc) – that’s almost 3,000 challenges in all so it's a game you will be able to come back to over and over again.

The cards are visually appealing with lots of bright colours and pictures.

The game targets players aged 12+ but, as you are encouraged to play in teams, younger players can join in and help out older players. You do need to have quite good general knowledge to play though and lateral thinking is essential. On the ‘Body Parts’ card, for instance, a picture of Concorde translates to ‘nose’, a photograph of Martin Luther King on the ‘Abba Songs’card identifies ‘I Have a Dream’ and on the ‘Egg Things’ card, the image of a stop watch leads to ‘an Egg Timer’. There's lots of groaning as the answers to some of the more difficult cryptic challenges are finally revealed !

The swivel-stand is ingenious, showing the clues on one side and the answers on the other. It's a fast and furious game with all team members shouting out answers as and when they find them, which can get a bit hectic, especially for the 'asker' who has to check answers as well as keep track of the score ! You only have a minute to answer so speed is of the essence.

I've been playing at home with the Madhouse kids, aged 13, 9 and 5. As long as you pick out the easier cards (the wordsearches for example) and don't worry too much about the egg-timer, it can still be enjoyed by players under 12.

Juliette even continued playing by herself, trying to figure out the answers to the cards in her own time !

We decided that what worked best for our family was to have all three Madhouse kids gang up on me, which evened things up quite nicely ! This is going to be a great game to play over Christmas when there are more grown ups about to get involved. I also love the fact that it encourages teamwork, with all of the kids on the same side rather than competing against each other for once. They love the fact that by combining their skills, they can sometimes beat me too !

If this looks like a game that you'd enjoy, don't go away - I have a competition coming right up where you can win Drumond Park's Shout !
