Madhouse Diaries : Geocaching at Puythouck

Today it was supposed to rain, but it looked quite reasonable so I decided to head off to Puythouck, a local nature reserve around a lake, for some walking and - you guessed it ! - geocaching. I asked who wanted to come and Sophie and Pierre said yes.

We started off in the woods and discovered a fitness trail.

Pierre and Sophie had great fun trying it out. At what age does sport stop being fun and start being a chore ?!

We soon got to the coordinates for the first cache. Pierre is really getting into geocaching now and knows all the likely places to look so he just laid down on the bridge and looked underneath - sure enough there it was !

All of the caches on this trail were labelled as small but we all thought they were regular or even large ones.

I decided to drop off a travel bug here and, as it was a Travel Racer, I popped in a soft toy car to go with it !

We had a total of six caches to hunt out and we managed to find all of them.

We exchanged loads of treasures and came home with a little bagful of bits and bobs to share out. I need to have another sift through the bottom of the toyboxes to refill my geocaching backpack !

All of this was in one cache !

Pierre tried out his balance on the wooden beams.

While Sophie got very energetic climbing up a tree to retrive one. She asked me to push her bum up the tree and ended up perched on my shoulder which made me laugh so much, my legs went wobbly and we both nearly fell down the bank !

For the final three, we headed out of the woodland and around the lake. After admiring the windsurfers, we had a quick play on the exercise equipment then headed for home just as the big black rainclouds filled the sky.

Not sure how many more of these geocaching sessions we'll manage to get in while the weather holds, so I'm heading out at every available opportunity. We covered 11km which is great for hitting my steps targets on the FitBug too !

  1. Did you ever get around to checking out "Ingress"?
I think I recommended it to you on your last geocaching post...

IF it was a different blogger, ingress is a bit like a cross between geocaching abd capture the flag with a scifi conspiracy storyline and strategy thrown in.

Portals to another place have sprung up all over the world, usually around significant places such as works of art or other signs of human creativity. The goal is to hack these portals for items to aid you in your attempts to control them. There are 2 factions, the enlightened and resistance battling it out for control of the portals. You also link portals together and when you succeed in linking three into a triangle you get a control field which prevents anyone linking from within it (and increases your faction's global "mind unit" score). This truly is a global game, some of the control fields created are absolutely MASSIVE, one set of fields a few months ago covered the whole northern hemisphere, all the more impressive when you consider that to create a field you need to have keys to all the portals you're linking to (which means being either given the keys by someone who's been there or visiting yourself), even more impressiver when you consider you can't link across existing links, so they have to be removed before you can.

    1. I love the way geocaching leads you to discover things you didn't know where there- and it doesn't cost a penny ! :)

  3. What a fun walk and your pictures definitely show it! :) Now if only the weather stayed this way, we might be able to have more of this. Sadly that isn't the case. #countrykids.

  5. Well done on all your finds, have to agree they don't look small to me either! One of those reminds me of a cache I did in the Midlands, it was called "Polly Put It On" and it was actually a camouflaged kettle under a bridge! Great fun :)
