DVD review : The Fall Series 2

There has been some cracking drama on TV lately but, if you've been kicking yourself because all your mates have been going on about their favourite series but you've missed them, the good news is that some of them are being released on DVD and Blu-Ray this week. I already reviewed The Missing last week (I also have a giveaway where you can win 2 DVDs of the series) which is out on 26th December, and on the same date, you'll be able to buy The Fall Series 2. We received a review copy and I've been catching up on the series.

The original series of The Fall had the nation gripped over its five episode run and was BBC Two’s most watched drama in 2013, attracting more than 4 million viewers, following the lives of two hunters - a serial killer stalking his victims and a high-powered detective superintendent on his trail.

Hollywood star Gillian Anderson (probably best known for her role in The X Files but I also reviewed her co-written novel A Vision of Fire yesterday) and man of the moment Jamie Dornan (Fifty Shades of Grey) slip back into their roles as DSI Stella Gibson and serial killer Paul Spector. The second series begins ten days after the end of the first series showdown when Spector told DSI Gibson that she would never catch him. As Gibson tries in vain to help Spector’s surviving victim remember the identity of her attacker, Spector is forced to deal with the loose ends that he left behind in Belfast. His return to the city reveals that someone from his past has been helping police with their enquires, forcing Spector to change his plans with terrifying consequences.

The new series is set to be one of the most talked-about series of the year (I can confirm this from my twitter and facebook feeds !) and will be released on DVD and Blu-ray two-disc sets courtesy of RLJ Entertainment’s Acorn Label, as well as a The Fall Complete Series One and Two Box Set

It is a complex cat and mouse thriller that will have you hooked right from the start. I missed the first series but I still really enjoyed the second one (but I might have to buy the box set and catch up with what I missed now !). It turns the usual detective drama format on its head because you know from the outset who the perpetrator is, rather then being strung along through a series of likely suspects. This means that the pace is slower and seems less stressful, but it's still a chilling and gripping drama that I really enjoyed watching.
