Kids' app review : Little Galaxy

Independent developer Bitmap Galaxy got in touch with me earlier in the week to tell me about their game Little Galaxy, which has just had its biggest ever update to celebrate passing the one million-download milestone.

It is an incredibly simple game. Described as a one-touch control ‘endless jumper’, it follows the adventures of a young inventor who dreams of moving home and living on a far away galaxy. The aim of the game is for players to control the inventor as he progresses through levels and completes a number of challenges by leaping from planet to planet. The inventor must collect stars and diamonds that can then be used to complete each level as well as earn upgrades and bonuses. Leaps need to be timed correctly in order for the inventor to make a successful jump to the next planet. Players control the character using a super-simple one-touch system that makes the game extremely accessible for all ages.

The new updates aim to enhance the gaming experience by including the ability for players to unlock new male and female characters, as well as dress them in a huge array of costumes including pirate, princess, footballer and ninja outfits. The game also features a host of upgradeable power-ups that can affect gameplay, including a star-attracting magnet and a comet that adds more time.

I have to be honest, as a grown-up, I soon got bored, but 5-year-old Pierre loves it. He keeps pointing out new pretty planets that he's discovered and seems mesmerised by the simple jumping from planet to planet. He often finds timed games frustrating when he gets stuck on a level so the infinifty mode of this game suits him to a tee.

Little Galaxy is available as a free or premium app (costing £1.49) on the App Store and Google Play. The free version enables players to purchase diamonds, which can then be used to unlock extra characters and power-ups.
