Madhouse Mocktail : Teen-a Colada

I was amazed to see just how many people were blogging, tweeting and posting on Facebook at the start of the year about taking part in Dry January - it must be the result of all that festive over-indulgence ! The tricky thing is keeping it going, once those New Year's resolutions have started to flag and the bad habits start creeping back in, but Drinkaware are going out of their way to keep the momentum going and encourage people to cut down on the booze. One way is to swap your usual tipple for a fun and funky mocktail (that's a cocktail without the alcohol) and they invited us to create our own. I decided to have a play with my favourite cocktail, the Pina Colada, and came up with this kid-friendly version that I've called the Teen-a Colada !

Teen-a Colada

ingredients :

slice of fresh pineapple (or tinned, if it's all you have)
50ml pineapple juice
25ml coconut milk
juice of half a lime

Place all the ingredients in a blender and whizz until smooth. Serve over ice with a straw.

The kids were so enthusiastic about drinking them that I totally forgot the garnish. What I meant to do was dip the rim of the glasses in a little dish of pineapple juice then a dish of dessicated coconut and serve with a wedge of pineapple and a slice of lime on the side of the glass. Add a little parasol stuck in a cherry if you really want to push the boat out !

Drinkaware have some other mocktail recipes to tempt you with. On their website, you can find videos showing you how to make :

Lime Rickey (like an alcohol-free mojito)
The Real Shirley Temple
Virgin Mary
Sparkling Pom Collins
Ginger Limeade

They all sound lovely, especially the Lime Rickey as I have fond memories of sipping on a mojito as the sun went down when we were on holiday in Morocco and I fancy trying a non-alcoholic version now we're back home !

You can find all the recipes and lots more advice and information on the Drinkaware website. Head over to https://www.drinkaware.co.uk/make-a-change/how-to-cut-down/tips-to-cutting-down-at-home/quick-tips-to-cutting-down/mocktails

If you're watching your waistline, you might like to bear this in mind too - and that's not counting the kebabs/crisps/peanuts that often go hand in hand with an evening on the booze ! I find the cider one particularly scary as that is my usual drink - eeek !

Disclosure : Drinkaware provided us with a shopping voucher to buy our mocktail ingredients.
