Picture book review : Preposterous Rhinoceros - Tracy Gunaratnam

Preposterous Rhinoceros is a lovely story about the joy of reading that was perfect for celebrating World Book Day yesterday.

King Lion has lost his voice and, as he's the only one who can read, the animals of the jungle are very sad that they'll have to miss out on their bedtime story. The lovely rhino is keen to help out - the only problem is, he hasn't got a clue how books work.

He heads off into the jungle for advice, which he takes very literally when he is encouraged to dive in (very painful !) or get stuck in (very messy !). His silly antics had Pierre giggling and he soon understood the meaning of the word preposterous in the title!

The rhino eventually gets some sensible advice and is taught how to read. The book explains that while it isn't easy, once you've learned, you can enjoy all sorts of stories and share them with your friends.

Seeing how proud of himself the rhino is when he can read the bedtime story and how impressed everyone is, including King Lion, is great encouragement for beginner readers and Pierre proudly told me that he'll be able to read by himself soon.

The vibrant illustrations by Marta Costa really bring the tale to life and the silly play on words will have even the grown-ups smiling as they read !
