Picture book review : T-Rex Terror - Timothy Knapman & Tim Wesson

T-Rex Terror, subtitled The Supersaurus Legend begins ..., is a new addition to Parragon's Dino Supersaurus range.

We were in for a surprise when we turned to the first page because it's written in a comic book format. Pierre loved the bright colours and action packed pictures but it did make it quite hard to read together as a bedtime story, so this is better suited to older children. I passed it on to Juliette who read it cover to cover and thought it was great fun. There are quite a few big and sometimes difficult words - just on the first double page, there is radioactive meteorite, bustling dinotropolis and Cretaceous Park to deal with ! - so you might need to help out beginner or less-confident readers.

The action-packed tale takes place in New Dino City, a dinotropolis that is in dino-danger ! Tyrant tyrannosaur T-Rex and his army of ninja raptors are determined to take over the city and only one thing can stop them - the supersaurs ! It's non-stop action and Juliette said it was like watching a cartoon but in book form. I think this would really appeal to reluctant readers who may be less likely to sit down with a more traditional word-heavy book as it is very visually appealing. The final sentence - "and so the city is safe ... until next time!" really makes you want to look out for the next episode.
