A post-Easter culinary voyage to Easter Island !

This month's Kitchen Trotter box has just arrived and it's taking us to Chile, which is where Easter Island is, if you were wondering about the title of the post. Sophie made me smile because she said "we'll be eating chilli con carne then!" - nope, but there is a definite spicy theme going on.

The first thing I pulled out of the box was this mix for empanadas filling - hmmmm empanadas, so far so good.

Next I discovered a jar of dulce de leche and a tin of Mapuche Indian spice mix. This is a smoky chilli mix apparently and is used in the majority of Chilean dishes.

Next, a bag of artisanal vegetable chips.

A bag of biltong, to be used in a recipe rather than snacked on straight out of the pack, some dried peaches and a mix for pisco sour cocktails. The goodie this month was a little spout, which should be handy for pouring the cocktails.

Now on to the recipes - the starter is Empanadas with Pebre Chileno, which is like a little tomato salsa.

Charquican looks interesting - it's a traditional Chilean stew made with meat, potatoes and vegetables that originally used salted llama but now used minced beef. Phew !

Dessert is Mote con Huesillos - a strange-sounding combination of rehydrated dried peaches in juice with wheat.

Alfajores Chilenos are biscuits sandwiched together with dulce de leche.

And the final recipe is for Pisco Sour, a cocktail which can be made with or without alcohol.

I'll keep you posted as I try out the recipes - it sounds like a great selection this month, and I'm more in my comfort zone than with last month's Japanese box !

  1. I've never heard of these - They look great to teach kids about what different countries eat. Going off to Google them right now :)

    1. I used to be with Kitchen Nomad who stopped trading. Kitchen Trotter is a Frech company, but they are branching out in the UK too.
