A Gold Star for George - Alice Hemming

Never underestimate the power of a gold star ! I still remember how incredibly proud I used to feel when I got a gold star (or even a red, yellow or green one) at junior school for doing something extra nice or handing in good work and, even though I teach in secondary school, my pupils (the 11 year olds at least) still get all excited when I put a sticker on their tests if they get a good mark or make a lot of progress. Supernanny certainly knew what she was on about when she extolled the virtues of reward charts ! But I digress ! I'm here to tell you about A Gold Star for George, Alice Hemming's latest picture book that Maverick kindly sent through for us to review.

The Madhouse kids instantly recognised George the Giraffe and his animal friends at the Heavenly Hippos Wildlife Park from The Black and White Club, another of Alice Hemming's books, which was even read on CBeebies bedtime stories by Sir Derek Jacobi. You can see what we thought of The Black and White Club here, as well as two other Alice Hemming books, Robopop and Bibble and the Bubbles.

In this charming story, the animals are all excited about a new poster that has gone up announcing that awards will be given out in a variety of categories. As his animal friends win prize after prize, George is happy for them but can't help but feel a bit sad when he doesn't get an award.

His friends put a smile back on his face though by presenting him with their own awards. It's a lovely look at friendship, as well as learning that winning isn't necessarily the most important thing. Pierre enjoyed naming all the animals and working out which ones we'd spotted on our recent trip to Chessington, then we all decided which awards we would give everyone in the Madhouse Family !
