Another month, another globecooking destination ... this month's Kitchen Trotter box is set to take us on a culinary journey of discovery to Indonesia. I didn't realise how big Indonesia is - it covers three time zones and is made up of 17,000 islands, of which only 1/3 are inhabited and some have yet to be discovered !
So what's in the box ?
Gado Gado Peanut Sauce
Candlenuts, which look like hazelnuts but taste totally different, and Pandan flavouring, which is bright green and apparently has a very strong flavour - I haven't tasted it yet though so I don't know if that's a good or bad thing !
Kecap (which apparently inspired the word ketchup) - a thick sweet soy sauce that is used in place of salt and pepper in Indonesian restaurants.
Terasi or Shrimp paste - it's fermented and needs to be cooked so is often used in sauces
Powdered Lemongrass and Combava Leaves - the combava is a citrus fruit similar to lemons and the leaves have a lovely citrus flavour, apparently.
On to the all important recipes ...
Gado Gado, a lovely looking salad with potatoes and an exotic sauce
Mie Goreng, a dish made with noodles, chicken and vegetables
Ayem Areh, another chicken dish but this time using coconut milk and candlenuts
And finally, a very green dessert, Kue Dadar Gulung, coconut pancakes with Pandan extract
Needless to say, I'll be back to tell you how I get on when I try out the different dishes.
Looking forward to hearing how you get on - Indonesian food is my favourite of all!
ReplyDeleteIt all sounds rather nice - I've scheduled some in on next week's menu plan and made the shopping list for tomorrow ! :)
