Madhouse diaries : Rockpooling in Brittany

If there's one thing that Brittany has in plentiful supply, it's beaches and rocky coves to explore. The coastline really reminds me of the wild and windswept Cornish coast, which makes sense, as it's just opposite.

On our final day visiting the in-laws in Daoulas, we collected up the buckets and spades, towels and cousins, and headed off to the Pointe de Bendy a few minutes away in Logonna Daoulas.

The kids went scrambling over the rocks, looking for sea creatures.

And it wasn't long before the grown-ups joined in.

Pierre headed down to the sea to get some water to keep his discoveries safe.

Don't fall in !

"Look Mum, tiny shrimps that are so small, they're transparent !"

"Dad, come and help me find some crabs."

Pierre looked very proud of himself every time he came sploshing over with his bucket !

It was great to see how fascinated he was, especially by the whelks "sticking their eyes out" in the bottom of the bucket !

Even Mamie joined in with the whelk hunting, but little did the Mahouse kids and cousins know that she was going to take them home and cook them !

Sophie was content to sit on the rocks, chatting about our adventures (and teen crushes !) in Turkey and posing for photos !

In the meantime, Juliette was quite successful at seeking out crabs.

These ones certainly weren't big enough to go in Mamie's cooking pot though !

Time to go home which means time to throw the creatures back in the sea ... all except the poor whelks in Mamie's bucket !

  2. Ooh, that looks so much fun! I love hunts for sea creatures, it looks like they managed to find a fair amount and so much fun to watch too!
We definitely need to try some rock pooling sometime soon, will probably be along our chilly Scottish coast though! :) x

  8. Oh wow Brittany looks great. I do see what you mean about it looking a bit like Cornwall. The coastline around Falmouth looks a bit like this with the rugged rocks and stony beaches. What a beautiful day with something to do for everyone. It looks like they're having so much fun exploring all the rock pools. I can't wait to do this with my daughter when she's older. Thank you so much for linking this up to #whatevertheweather x

  9. What a fab place to have been able to explore with the family, you're right that it looks similar to the Cornish Coast. It's fab to watch them all exploring the rock pools looking for all manner of animals, it's a great learning experience rock pooling. I hope Mamie enjoyed cooking her whelks, I'm sure they were delicious. Thanks for linking up with me on Country Kids.
