Hammamas - The Clever Cotton Towel (review)

Just as we were getting ready to head off on holiday for a fortnight in Turkey, an email landed in my inbox from a company called Hammamas, asking if we'd like to discover their beautiful range of Turkish cotton towels. They explained that they work closely with traditional weavers in rural Turkey to produce their Hammamas in the same way the towels have been created for generations, sourcing only local Turkish cotton as it's the best quality money can buy. They promise that the combination of premium quality cotton and traditional weaves and techniques creates a product that is of the highest quality, that's soft, absorbent and lasts.

We've been on holiday to Turkey several times (this year was our fourth) and I can't say I've ever noticed anything different about their towels, so I was intrigued. When my Hammamas towel arrived, I was initially sceptical. It's very thin, almost more like a high quality tea towel material than a regular towel, and I couldn't see how it would ever be absorbent enough to dry you off after a swim or a shower. Then I tried it ... and my chin hit the floor ! I have no idea how they've managed to make something so lightweight and thin that absorbs as much water as a regular towel but they have. The advantages are manifold - it takes up less space in your suitcase, is lighter, dries quicker, takes up less space in the washing machine and won't clog up your tumble drier filter with the fluff that normal towels shed.

That's not all though. They are also extremely versatile and can be used as a towel, sarong, beach dress, scarf, bath towel, picnic rug, wrap, blanket ... Because it's so light and not at all bulky, it stays in place when you wrap it around you so you won't have to worry about it dropping to the floor as you wander from the pool or beach back to your hotel room, even with your arms full of arm bands, inflatables and sun cream !

Each Hammamas comes in a wet bag, which is perfect for travelling, and they are available in a wide range of gorgeous colours. You have to try one to believe it - I'd never have believed the claims if I hadn't seen for myself how absorbent they are. You don't get the soft, snuggly cocoon of a freshly laundered fluffy bath towel (warmed on the radiator on particularly cold days) that I must admit I do like in the winter, but for the summer, at home or on holiday, they are absolutely ideal.

  1. I swear by travel towels for trips away these days, rarely pack an actual beach towel. They are so handy!

Turkish cotton towels are also known for their durability and longevity, as they become softer and more absorbent with each wash. They are also less likely to pill or shrink compared to towels made from other types of cotton.
