Maverick Early Readers review

We love Maverick's picture books here at The Madhouse so we were very excited to learn that they have launched a new venture that will open up their enjoyable stories to a whole new audience - Early Readers. The original picture books have been adapted by the authors to help children make the important transition from listener to reader.

So far, five titles have been released :

Preposterous Rhinoceros by Tracy Gunaratnam
The Black and White Club by Alice Hemming
A Scarf and a Half by Amanda Brandon
Yuck! said the Yak by Alex English
Hocus Pocus Diplodocus by Steve Howsen

You can click through to read my reviews of the original picture books - the Early Readers have retained the atmosphere, fun stories and appealing illustrations of the originals, just in a simplified, more accessible form.

The books have been edited with the help of a special educational consultant so that they fit into the industry standard book bands - green, orange and turquoise. Each book ends with a double page quiz featuring five reading comprehension questions ... as well as the answers on the next page.

As Pierre already knows the stories from listening to me read him the originals, he's been really excited about trying to read them himself. The fact that he already knows the essence of the tales increases his confidence and helps him sound out some of the more difficult words.

To make them even more educational, whether at home or in the classroom, Maverick have also created learning resources to accompany each book. Each pack includes learning objectives, a suggested lesson plan, language and linguistic features and activity sheets and they can be downloaded from Maverick's website or from TES.com.

As both a teacher and a parent, the series, and the accompanying learning resources, get a big thumbs up from me.
