Children's book review : Dork Diaries : Puppy Love - Rachel Renée Russell

If you have a tween or teenaged daughter, I'm sure you've already heard of the massively popular Dork Diaries book series. The latest installment Puppy Love (the tenth book in the series in fact, which is pretty impressive !) will hit the shelves tomorrow, which is perfect timing if you're looking for a way to keep your kids occupied and away from screens during half term !

Even if you haven't read any of the other books in the series, you can still enjoy reading Puppy Love. To bring you up to speed, Nikki thinks her life will be nice and peaceful now that nasty Mackenzie is out of the way, but she seems to be a drama-magnet ! When the local animal shelter where Brandon volunteers is unable to look after a litter of abandoned puppies, she decides to save the day by taking care of them herself ... in secret, which has some rather hilarious consequences.

It's a lovely storyline, especially for animal-lovers, and the ongoing rivalry between kind-hearted Nikki and mean Mackenzie is a great way of taking the drama out of any nastiness that young readers may encounter at their own school. It's a fun read that is full of laughs with realistic characters that tweens will relate to. The numerous illustrations break up the text to make it less daunting for reluctant or beginner readers too.

It reminds me of a girlie version of Wimpy Kid (although there's nothing to stop boys enjoying the series too !)
