New York Bakery Co pretzels review

As a Brit, if I hear the word pretzel, I instantly think of the little, hard, salt-crusted, biscuity things that George W Bush Jr almost choked on ! I have fond memories of our honeymoon in the States though, seeing street vendors on pretty much every corner selling big, soft, breadlike pretzels from little carts, so I was really pleased when New York Bakery Co got in touch with news of their brand new Soft Pretzel Knots, a first in UK supermarkets. The pretzels promise to deliver the authentic taste of New York delis and bakeries and come in three flavours: Original, Sweet Cinnamon, and Cheddar and Red Onion. We received a funky hamper of New York themed treats, including an I heart NY mug, some all-American hot chocolate with marshmallows and all three flavours of the pretzels to try out.

I have to admit, I wasn't initially sure what to do with them - should they be eaten hot or cold? Are they more a breakfast thing or just something to snack on when you get the munchies halfway through the day? Well, it turns out that anything goes - the New York Bakery Co say that they can be enjoyed in the morning with a cup of steaming hot coffee, as a mid-afternoon pick-me-up or later whilst relaxing in front of your favourite movie. As they are individually wrapped, they are also ideal for keeping in your handbag for kiddie (or grown up) snacks on the go.

Our unanimous favourite was the Cheddar and Red Onion one, partly because they are seeded which adds a lovely texture to the soft chewiness of the pretzels. They can be eaten straight out of the pack or warmed for a few seconds in the microwave, but this does change their texture slightly. Juliette loves them spread with a thin scraping of butter then zapped in the microwave so that it melts. They could also be toasted under the grill.

New York Bakery Co’s Soft Pretzel Knots are inspired by the pretzels sold in delis in New York City. They are hand-folded to create a unique shape and they are are free from artificial flavours, colours and preservatives. Each pretzel contains less than 150 calories and they are much more filling than a bag of crisps or a bar of chocolate if you need a snack between meals.
