Old El Paso Hearty Burrito Kit review

When I was a student, cooking Mexican food invariably meant knocking up a huge pot of chilli con carne or sometimes veggie chilli. Since having the kids, nine times out of ten it's fajitas because I can do one chicken pan with spice and one without so it caters to all palates. When I saw this Old El Paso Hearty Burrito Kit in Aldi, it looked like the perfect combination of the two, especially as it only has a mild chilli rating so it should be kid-friendly. The final deciding factor was that it promises to get a meal on the table in just fifteen minutes. Sold !

Inside the kit, you get three things - a pack of 8 flour tortillas (as a family of five, we always wish there were ten !), a sachet of bean sauce and a sachet of salsa.

Put some mince in a pan to brown off and pour off any excess liquid. I also tossed in some onions and mushrooms. When the mince is cooked, add the contents of the bean sauce sachet plus a few spoonfuls of water and simmer for 5 minutes.

During this time, chop up some tomatoes, shred some lettuce and drain a can of sweetcorn.

The meat has a lovely smoky flavour and the merest hint of spice. The beans are very few and far between though, which is a shame.

Empty the salsa into a bowl - it tastes lovely and fresh with juicy chunks of tomato.

After heating the tortillas in the microwave, top with lettuce, mince, sweetcorn, tomato, salsa, guacamole, grated cheese ...

Don't overdo it though or you won't be able to roll them up !

Big smiles and clean plates all round ! Fajitas and burritos are both a great way of getting the kids to pile up their plates with vegetables so we'll definitely be having these again.

  2. A burrito kit is perfect, I can never get the flavours right when making them, may have to give it a go using the kit
