Book review : High Tide - Veronica Henry

Funerals are never happy moments but for the two main characters of High Tide, they end up being life-affirming and ultimately a catalyst for positive changes. I say that they are the main characters but the most important entity in the book is really Pennfleet, the charming seaside town in which the book is set and which has already featured in another of Veronica Henry's books, The Long Weekend.

Kate has come back to her hometown from her stressful job and life in New York to attend the funeral of her mother and clear out her childhod home. The little Cornish town works its soothing magic on her frazzled nerves and causes her to reassess her values and change the path of her life.

Vanessa is also in mourning, having just lost her husband, one of the richest and most powerful men in the town. As they had amicably grown apart, she feels strangely detached though and sees her widowhood as a new lease of life, opening up avenues to happiness and maybe a new romance.

It's an uplifting easy read about second chances, new beginnings and having the courage to change the path of your life. It's quite predictable but it's perfect for a bit of feel-good escapism.
