Kids' book review : My Parents Are Driving Me Crazy - Pete Johnson

My Parents Are Driving Me Crazy is the sequel to My Parents Are Out Of Control (click through to read my review) and How To Train Your Parents but it is also thoroughly enjoyable as a standalone novel.

We catch up with Louis, whose life is about to be turned upside down because his dad has lost his job and decided to become a stay-at-home dad, replacing his mum on cooking and cleaning duties, with very mixed results. In between attempts to get his parents back on track, Louis also wants to follow his dream of being a stand-up comedian and pursue a budding romance with his best friend Maddy. All with hilarious consequences, of course !

The book is often written in diary form with the texts broken up into more manageable chunks for reluctant or beginner readers, but it is above all the funny antics and jokes that will keep teens and pre-teens avidly turning the pages. Louis is a very likeable character and he is hilarious, even when (or especially when !) he isn't trying to be.

In amongst all the jokes and funny anecdotes, Pete Johnson does also evoke some of the more poignant episodes that youngsters such as Louis may well be going through - a parent's redundancy, loss of self esteem and depression, young love ...

It has humour, it has quirky but believable characters and it has just the right amount of eww-factor to really appeal to kids (and big kids like me !). If you'd like to buy a book as a stocking filler this Christmas, this one will be a safe bet, appealing to teen and tween-aged readers of both sexes and all reading levels.
