Picture book review : Stick Man Hardcover Special Edition - Julia Donaldson & Axel Scheffler

As soon as I hear the names of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, I automatically think of The Gruffalo, closely followed by Room on the Broom, but the multi-award-winning pair have a plethora of titles under their belts, including Stick Man, which will be on TV in its animated form on Christmas Day. Ahead of Christmas, the classic picture book was given a makeover and released as a gift edition, with brand new cover artwork by Axel Scheffler and a poster on the reverse of the jacket.

If you don't know the book, it's a lovely story that is just begging to be read aloud at bedtime. "Stick Man lives in the family tree With his Stick Lady Love and their stick children three."

But Stick Man is a sad old soul, split up from his wife and children and just wanting to be back home with them.

He gets into all sorts of scrapes, being used a a Pooh-stick, a sandcastle flag-holder, a fetch-stick for a dog, ...

Could things get any worse? Well, yes, they could, as he even ends up on top of a fire. As he'd got quite attached to the funny little Stick Man, Pierre looked totally horrified at this point !

But it's Christmas so it's bound to have a happy ending, and there's even a special visit from Santa !

It's a lovely story that we always enjoy reading and I can't wait for it to be brought to life on Christmas Day on TV (on BBC1 at 4.45pm - we should be digesting the turkey and passing round a plateful of mince pies by then !).
