You may remember that last month, we reviewed The Black Farmer Pulled Pork Sausages (and very nice they were too !) so we were delighted when they sent over a block of their Sweet Mature Cheddar Cheese to put through its paces.
We love cheddar here at The Madhouse but the kids sometimes find the mature version to be eye-wateringly strong. The Black Farmer promises to combine the strength you'd expect from mature cheddar but with real depth of flavour and a delicious rounded sweet finish, so I was keen to see what they'd think. Well, it got a unanimous thumbs up from both the kids and the grown-ups ! It has a robust but not pungent flavour and we loved the creamy but crumbly texture. It's lovely cut straight from the block, served in a sandwich or a ploughmans (it's fabulous paired with a slightly sharp pickle or chutney) but it also melts beautifully, creating a cracking cheese on toast. Try it on crusty bread layered with Parma ham and tomatoes then popped under the grill until it is bubbling and golden - utterly delicious and so simple to prepare.
The Black Farmer Sweet Mature Cheddar uses 100% British milk and is made using the traditional craft of 'cheddaring' by hand-piling and turning the curd. It is currently available in selected Asda stores in 400g packs with a rrp of £3.00. This is the brand's first foray into dairy products but I certainly hope it won't be its last !
