DVD review : Bloodline (The Complete First Season)

When the chance came up to review The Complete First Season of Bloodline on DVD, I was intrigued, because it was a series I had never heard of. The blurb sounded interesting and as soon as I started watching the first episode, I was hooked, so I've been on a bit of a Bloodline marathon ever since, watching back to back episodes to see how things will unfold.

The series follows the Rayburn family, owners of a Key West resort and, so we learn, keepers of the island’s darkest secrets. On the surface, they all appear very nice and respectable but the fragile facade risks being shattered when prodigal son and black sheep of the family Danny (played by Ben Mendelsohn) comes home for a family reunion. As the family's past wrongdoings risk being exposed, the remaining siblings band together to try and limit the damage, and they have to choose between what’s right and what’s best.

The tagline on the DVD case says "We're not bad people, but we did a bad thing". The atmosphere is very dark and gritty but also realistic, and the tension is maintained throughout the whole series. It reminded me in some ways of The Sopranos, with a family of likeable rogues and an outer show of respectability disguising some horrendous secrets that outsiders would never imagine for an instant.

The matriarch of the family is played by Oscar winner Sissy Spacek but she is not the only famous name in the star-studded cast. Kyle Chandler plays John Rayburn, the second son who is a detective and local deputy with the sheriff's office, while the patriarch is played by Oscar nominee Sam Shepard. With big names like that, it's not surprising that the acting is top notch.

It's quite an addicitve show, and I'm racing through trying to get to what is billed as a shocking finale. Judging by what I've seen so far, it surely won't disappoint !
