We discover Sassy Kids Box (review)

Sassy Kids Box recently got in touch to ask if we'd like to learn more about their kids' activity box subscription scheme. I'd already heard of Sassy Bloom, the multi-award winning and celeb endorsed care package delivery scheme for pregnant and new mums, but I was unaware of Sassy Kids Box. It's basically the logical follow on and has, in fact, been created in response to feedback from Sassy Bloom customers who were disappointed when their children grew too old for the Sassy Bloom scheme (which caters for children up to age 2, soon to be 3) or didn't want their older children to miss out on the fun of receiving a regular box of goodies.

Sassy Kids Box targets children aged 3-8 and they set out their mission as revolutionising the way that families shop and spend time together. Each month, they promise to deliver a box of goodies to provide family fun and quality time together. The box is designed to be letterbox-friendly so you won't come home to a pesky missed delivery slip and the hassle of a trip to the post office.

Having reviewed similar kids' subscription schemes in the past, I thought I knew what to expect, because they are all unanimously very crafts-focused. As we unpacked the contents of the Sassy Kids Box, we were intrigued though because, although there were some crafting activities (we instantly spotted colouring sheets, a glue stick and scissors), there was a whole lot more that didn't involve crafts at all.

We discovered that the main activity in this box was the intriguingly named Popcorn Olympics.

The enclosed instruction sheet provided the inspiration and loose rules for eight fun challenges involving popcorn : Popcorn Catch, Popcorn Toothpick Swap, Popcorn Straw Blow, Popcorn Cup Drop, Popcorn Throw, Popcorn Distance Throw, Popcorn Cup, Popcorn Darts. Who'd have thought you could do so many different things with a bowl of popcorn ?!

Before we could begin our popcorn olympic challenges, we had another activity to carry out first - popping the kernels that were in the box. We've often made microwave popcorn before but this was the first time we'd done it in a pan so that we could see exactly what was going on, so Pierre was transfixed and thought it was absolutely hilarious when they started popping up against the glass lid of the pan !

Although the activities are designed to appeal to 3-8 year olds, big sister Sophie couldn't resist joining in (and eating handfuls of popcorn - luckily there was plenty to go round !). The different challenges were very quick and simple to explain and involved as much luck as judgement so the odds of winning were pretty even, regardless of age.

As you can see, if you watch our little video, there was lots of giggling and even Juliette, who wasn't originally very keen on getting involved, put in an appearance to see what was causing so much hilarity.

Go on, admit it, I know you're itching to grab some popcorn and have a go yourselves now !

After totting up all the points on the scorecard, Pierre was delighted to be declared the winner and awarded the solid gold (well, solid gold plastic!) medal from the kit. Basically we were all winners though because we'd shared a lot of fun and laughter.

The fun wasn't over yet though. While the kids polished off the remaining "clean" popcorn, we collected up the pieces from the floor to complete the Bonus Activity - making a popcorn sheep. I thought this was a great bit of upcycling and very eco-friendly. While we were waiting for the glue to dry (I did replace the glue stick in the box with some white PVA glue because I don't think a glue stick would be strong enough to hold popcorn in place), we sat down together for the final Extra Fun Alphabet Challenge and Pierre did the colouring sheets.

There was plenty to keep up entertained over the weekend and the kids were still playing with the dart board even when all the popcorn had been eaten, hoovered up or made into sheep, so I actually think it's great value for £3.99 (especially as your first box is half price, costing £1.99 with a £0.99 delivery charge). The scheme is designed to deliver fortnightly boxes but once you have received your first box, you can cancel or pause your boxes at any time from your account.
