Carlton Kids Mega Model Airplane review

When Carlton Kids asked if we'd like to review a couple of their most recent titles, I instantly knew that the Mega Model Airplane book would appeal to Pierre. I wasn't prepared for quite how enthusiastic Madhouse Daddy and Madhouse Grandad would get though !

Inside the box, you get a whole series of thick laminated cardboard sheets with numbered parts to press out.

This was Pierre's job.

With a little help from Dad !

The detailed step-by-step guide is easy to follow, especially with several helpers passing along the numbered pieces in order to chief constructor, Madhouse Grandad !

Some pieces are slightly fiddly to slot in place but it was all fairly straightforward and the model is quite robust, with the pieces staying firmly in place once positioned.

We were all very impressed with how quickly it all started coming together, without the need for scissors or glue. It's a big model, measuring 58cm in length with a whopping 70cm wingspan.

It ended up being a very enjoyable inter-generational Sunday afternoon activity.

It comes with a hanger so that you can suspend it from your bedroom ceiling, but Pierre also enjoyed playing with it, using the press-out characters that you can stand up.

Once you've finished constructing and marvelling at your finished creation, you can learn all about the plane, which is a Beechcraft Staggerwing, and the history of flying in general, in the enclosed guidebook (which is full of fascinating facts, as well as the instructions).

It's a lovely introduction to model-making for young children, although they will need adult help. In the same series, there are two other titles, which sound equally appealing : Dragon and T-Rex.
