Madhouse recipe : Spicy sesame beef

Having defrosted some beef that was in the freezer, I turned to my spice rack and condiments cupboard for inspiration and came up with this quick and simple but flavour-packed Oriental-inspired throw-it-all-together stir fry. Perfect for those evenings when you get home from work and need something on the table quick.

Spicy sesame beef

ingredients :

a drizzle of olive oil
500g steak, sliced into thin strips
1 clove garlic, finely minced
1 red onion
1/2 red pepper
1/2 green pepper
4 mushrooms
salt, pepper
a generous squirt of sweet soy sauce
a small shake of black rice vinegar
a sprinkle of sesame seeds
a sprinkle of red chilli flakes

Heat the oil in a large wok and fry the onions and garlic for 2 minutes.

Throw in the steak (cut into thin strips), season with salt and pepper and stir fry for 5 minutes.

Add the red and green peppers and the mushrooms, all finely chopped. Stir fry for a further 5 minutes and drain off any excess liquid released by the meat and mushrooms if necessary.

When the peppers and onions are cooked but still retain some crunch, squeeze over the sweet soy sauce (enough to coat the meat and veg) and give it all a good stir. Have a taste and drizzle over a little black rice vinegar (or white wine vinegar) to balance the flavours, if necessary.

Sprinkle with chilli flakes and sesame seeds.

Serve with rice or noodles.

  1. I don't eat beef but this is definitely something my husband would love, I might try it out on him!

  2. I've got most of the ingredients, apart from the black rice vinegar. Sounds tasty and full of flavours!

    1. That's what I'm using at the moment because I had some in a Kitchen Trotter box but you could use white wine vinegar, cider vinegar, whatever you have really to give it a bit of acidity to balance out the flavours
