Picture book review : Not Enough For Queen Fluff - Rachel Lyon

With all the recent focus on Queen Elizabeth II's 90th birthday celebrations, I couldn't help but smile when Maverick sent us through their latest picture book releases and one of them was queen-themed. Not Enough For Queen Fluff is written by Rachel Lyon and illustrated by Catalina Echeverri, two names that were already familiar to me from previous Maverick titles. Rachel Lyon wrote The Cautionary Tale of the Childe of Hale and I Wish I'd Been Born A Unicorn (click through to read my reviews). Catalina illustrated, amongst others, A Scarf and a Half, A Box of Socks and Lion and Mouse (which she also wrote).

This story focuses on Queen Fluff, a rather over-bearing and snobby royal rabbit who thinks it would be nice to visit the bunnies of the kingdom (queendom ?) but who has a list of demands longer than your arm (paw).

She is used to living the high life with servants, finery and a princess castle-shaped burrow and she expects her hosts' homes to meet her extremely high standards.

She's full of disdain when she visits some of the bunny homes , but ultimately she gets her comeuppance and a useful life lesson that friendship is worth more than all the fancy things in the world.

Stories told in rhyme always get a particularly enthusiastic response from the Madhouse kids for reading at bedtime and Pierre has also enjoyed reading this one aloud by himself, with the rhymes helping him to sound out unfamilair words. The highly detailed illustrations also help to really bring the story to life.
