Picture book review : Stone Underpants - Rebecca Lisle

There's an unwritten rule here at The Madhouse (and, I suspect, in any other house inhabited by under 10's !) that any book with the word underpants in the title is going to be good ! Pierre was in fits of giggles before we'd even got past the front cover !

We meet caveman (or should that be caveboy?) Pod who is fed up of having a cold bottom, so he decides he needs to make himself some underpants. This being the stone age, he naturally makes them out of stone, but they're not very practical.

He tries all sorts of other materials, from wood (too splintery), spider's webs (too sticky) and feathers (too tickly) to mud (too yucky) but nothing is quite right.

A playful mammoth gives him a brainwave and introduces a new prehistoric period - the wool age! Woolly underpants rock and solve the chilly bottom problem perfectly !

It's a fun story that we enjoyed reading together ... and as soon as we'd turned the final page, Pierre asked to start again ! We even pointed out a few dinosaur species in the first pictures, but you'll have more giggles than learning experiences in this book (which is not a bad thing at all !). There's a nice life lesson about problem solving and thinking outside of the box too.
