The February Degustabox review

Last week, the postie dropped off our latest Degustabox and as usual, we couldn't wait to find out what would be hiding inside this month's mystery foodie discovery box. Last month's box had a healthy theme, which is a bit of a tradition for the New Year box and not always that well received by the rest of the Madhouse family. Would this month's box get a more rapturous reception?

Well, things got off to a great start when they discovered not one but two bags of sweets from Bebeto - this month's Product of the Month. We discovered Cheese Cake Gummies (RRP £1.69) and Candy Crush Gummie Mix (RRP £1.69), both of which are very tasty, with strong fruity flavours and a nice chewy texture. The kids were particularly taken with the Candy Crush tie-in but some of the sweets (the long green cylinders) had a filling that had oozed out and stuck several sweets together. It hasn't been particularly hot lately so I'm not sure why they melted. It didn't stop us eating and enjoying them though !

Staying on the snack theme, we pulled out a bag of Willy Chase's Fitcorn Popcorn (RRP £1.99-£2.19), which is marketed as popcorn with grown-up flavours with real pedigree, free from GM, gluten and guilt ! We got the Salted Honey flavour, which sounded strange, but reminded us of the sweet and salty popcorn that we had tried in the past.

We also discovered a bag of Maui & Sons Dark Chocolate Coated Banana Chips (RRP £1). I've never seen these in the shops before but I'll be looking out for them because they're lovely, with a crunchy banana flavour giving way to smooth chocolate. Delicious !

The bottle on the right was the cause of much hilarity when the Madhouse kids laid eyes on it - a free sample of Willy's Apple Cider Vinegar (the full-size 500ml bottle has an RRP of £6.95). There is a recipe sheet in the box for an Invigorating Salad Dressing and a Rejuvenating Morning Detox.

Double Dutch is a Pomegranate & Basil Natural Premium Mixer that can be enjoyed on its own or  with your favourite spirits. I haven't tried this one yet but it's in the fridge waiting to be sampled.

There were squeals of excitement as the kids discovered more snacks for us to share out : New York Delhi's Americanos (RRP £1) which are Guatemalan coffee beans, roasted and covered in dark chocolate. Madhouse Daddy will get to try these all by himself as he's the only coffee-lover in the family !

Peppersmith Dental Mints (£1.50) are sweetened with xylitol and they can help keep your mouth fresh all day long in between brushing. I've tried these before and love them, especially as they're sugar-free. I also got to try the Peppersmith Dental Chewing Gum (RRP £1.50), which I hadn't seen before and really liked.

Diablo (95p) is another snack we'd never heard of before - it's a no added sugar chocolate coated wafer and is very tasty.

On to the drinks !

Blossom Hill (RRP £4.99) is a fresh and fruity twist on wine, combining light bubbles and natural fruit flavours. We received Summer Fruits (there is also Elderflower) which is a light, refreshing drink, on its own or added to a pitcher with fizzy water and wedges of fruit.

As their name suggests, Coldpress fruit and vegetable juices (£2.79) are cold pressed, not heated, so they naturally cram in more taste, vitamins and nutrients than conventional pasteurised juices. I had a moment of doubt when I saw that this one combined raspberry and beetroot (as well as apple, pear and lemon) but it was very nice indeed.

Just Bee Blueberry is  91% spring water mixed with juicy blueberries and a drop of lemon juice. It's refreshing, tasty and only 49 calories per carton.

Koko Dairy Free (£1.50) is a fresh tasting and versatile milk alternative made from freshly pressed coconut milk, but it has a neutral flavour so it can be used in tea and coffee, on cereal or in baking and smoothies. With 27 calories per 100ml, it's an even lighter option than skimmed milk.

Heinz No Added Sugar Beanz (2 x 65p) are the latest addition to the range and have no added sugar or artificial sweeteners. We couldn't taste any difference to the regular beans so that's a great swap for the health conscious consumer.

Kabuto Noodles (£1.99) are basically a posh pot noodle and this Vegetable Laksa variety is inspired by the warm coconut dishes of Malaysia. Just add boiling water for an instant light lunch or mid-afternoon snack.

There was also a lifestyle mag from Peppersmith called Pepper in the box.

So, all in all, a great box this month, full of things that the kids immediately wanted to nibble on, plus a few healthy swaps to try and quite probably adopt.

A subscription to Degustabox costs £12.99 per month including delivery, with each box having a value of much more than that, but the great news is, I have a discount coupon code for you which now gives you a whopping £7 off the price of your first box, so you'll get it for just £5.99 - just enter code 0BS6T at the checkout.
