We've been putting Persil Powergems to the test ! (review)

It was my day off yesterday, and, much as I'd love to say that I sat twiddling my thumbs all day and enjoying the peace and quiet, I actually spent most of the day catching up on errands, housework and - yep, you've guessed it - laundry. With three kids in the house, I seem to spend vast amounts of my free time rebooting the laundry and as soon as I get the laundry basket emptied, someone comes along with a load of clothes from their room and fills it up again !

Luckily, Persil came to the rescue and sent me some of their brand new Persil Powergems to try out. They launched this summer after ten years of research and development and they are totally unique - they look like confetti, contain 100% active ingredients and disperse in your drum throughout the entire wash cycle, promising to provide Persil's ultimate washing experience, in terms of stain removal, care and freshness. They smell lovely and have long-lasting fragrance because the scent releases as movement is made.

They are available across Non Bio and Bio variants, in 12, 19 and 30 wash packs. They are quick, simple and clean to use - no more drips and splashes, you just fill the dosing-cap and put it in with the washing.

Persil also provided us with some fun activities to get involved in and, inevitably, put the Powergems to the test, against common stains such as chocolate, grease and grass. As well as a game of rounders and some paints, they gave us a lovely recipe for brownies that we just had to try out.

Rich Chocolate Brownies

makes approximately 20

ingredients :

140g dark chocolate
225g butter
5 free range eggs
450g caster sugar
110g plain flour
55g cocoa powder

Method :

1. Heat the oven to 190C/375F/Gas 5. Line a 20x30cm baking tin with baking parchment.
2. Gently melt the butter and the sugar together in a large pan.
3. Take off the heat and beat in the rest of the ingredients.
4. Turn into the baking tin and bake for 30-40 minutes until the top of the brownie is firm but the inside still feels soft.
5. Take out of the oven and cool in the tin. Cut into 5cm squares when cool. Perfect with a cup of tea.

If there's one thing the Madhouse kids are good at, it's giving me endless opportunities to put laundry detergent to the test ! Wax crayons and coconut oil - check !

Ice cream - check !

Grass stains - check !

Chocolate sauce oozing out of pancakes - check !

Well, I'm pleased to report, it all came out in the wash. Now if only Persil could come up with something that repairs the holes in the knees of Pierre's trousers, that would be absolutely perfect !

Disclosure : We received the product in order to write an honest review.

  2. Did you try both the bio and the non-bio powergems and, if so, was there much of a difference between the two? Now my youngest is 11, I often opt for the bio option but would still prefer to use the non-bio version of a product if it works almost as well.

    1. Hi Wendy, I never see much difference but it probably depends what you're dealing with !

  3. That sounds interesting. It is sometimes possible to see where strong bio liquids have entered the drum by slight light areas on dark clothing which never come out.
