The Glenlivet Founder's Reserve review

I often think Madhouse Daddy gets a bit of a raw deal when it comes to my blog. While the kids get lots of toys to review and I try all the foodie products and join in with the recipe challenges, he tends to get a bit left out. (Although, to be honest, I think that quite suits him !) Well, this time around, he was in the reviewing hotseat when Bzz Agent sent a bottle of The Glenlivet Founder's Reserve to review.

The Glenlivet Founder's Reserve is a single malt Scotch whisky and, even as a non-whisky drinker, the honeyed, amber colour appealed to me. The official blurb explains : "With over 190 years of heritage in every bottle, The Glenlivet Founder’s Reserve is finely crafted to carry you away to the wild, rustic valley of Speyside. With fruity, brilliant flavours and a malt of exceptional smoothness from American first-fill casks, one taste and you’ll see why it’s called The Glenlivet."

The tasting notes on the box whet your appetite before you take the first sip :

Colour: Pale gold
Nose: Delicate aromas of citrus fruit, notably sweet orange
Palate: Sweet, fruit notes of zesty oranges and pears, with a hit of candy, toffee apples. Well balanced and exceptionally smooth
Finish: Long, creamy and smooth

Time to get Madhouse Daddy in for the testing. First sip : "Mmm very nice". Second sip : "Very smooth and mellow". Third sip : 'Yup, very drinkable indeed". That's about as good as it gets ! I tried prompting him with mentions of zesty citrus fruit or toffee apples, but he shook his head and said, "nope, just whisky, but very nice whisky". You can see why we do all the reviewing now !

I went to check the price and discovered that a 70cl bottle usually costs £32.50 but is currently on offer for £22 at Tesco (this was Tesco online, I'm not sure if the same deal is available instore). At that price, it's definitely worth grabbing a few bottles for the whisky-lovers in your life for Christmas.

Disclosure : As a Bzz agent, I received the product for free in return for honest feedback. If you want to sign up to be a Bzz agent and take part in campaigns, head over to www.bzzagent.co.uk.

  1. I've never been a whiskey lover, my fiance enjoys a tipple over Christmas though so definitely worth popping to Tesco to get him a bottle as a gift while its on offer, thank you xXx

  3. Lucky Madhouse Daddy! I don't know much about whisky, but this one sounds great.

  4. The way alcohol is described on the bottle makes me laugh sometimes; it's like a challenge presented to the taster to try and find these flavours within the whisky. It's not a disadvantage not to taste these flavours if the overall texture of the whisky is up to standard. If this is as nice as your husband suggests then it is certainly a suggestion for the Christmas list at such an affordable price.

    1. Beaujolais nouveau always makes me laugh when they announce that this year it tastes of bananas or strawberries - er no, just red wine !
