Ravensburger Puzzle review : The Cake Shed

We haven't even put the clocks back yet, but there's a distinct autumnal feel going on at the moment. We've turned the heating on here at The Madhouse, I've got the slow cooker out and everybody's coming down with the sniffles. Yep, autumn is definitely on the way ! Time to put the bikes, roller skates and footballs away and find some nice homely pursuits, starting off with jigsaw puzzles. There's something distinctly relaxing about sitting down around the table on a Sunday afternoon, working on the same puzzle and chatting away, putting the world to rights !

Well, Ravensburger recently delivered us a fabulous new puzzle to keep us busy. Called My Haven No.5, The Cake Shed, it's a 1000 piece puzzle depicting a wonderfully detailed place of culinary creation. You get an extra picture sheet in the box, which comes in very handy if you're working as a group.

Within three days of working on it after school, we had managed to piece the whole thing together. It's an impressive size - 70 x 50cm - so it takes up the end of our big dining table. There's plenty to keep you busy without ever seeming impossible, so it's perfect if you're looking for a fairly swift project.

We all loved the busy-ness of the picture, with so many distinct areas to work on. We spent ages putting together the highly detailed, multi-coloured work tables covered in cakes, material and art supplies.

Then moved on to the two women chatting on the doorstep. Are they friends or is she a customer? Are they sharing gossip or just making a delivery? We'll never know !

The cakes are all very different and detailed. There's a child's birthday cake, a pink cake for Chloe, a decadent multi-layered strawberries and cream cake and a box of mini delicacies in the corner - there's plenty to make you hungry !

I loved the shelves and cupboard which are totally crammed with little bottles of sweets for decorating the cakes. They reminded me of my own (and ever so slightly less over-stuffed !) kitchen cupboards that are full of things which need to be used up.

If you're looking for a lovely, relaxing pastime for the cooler months, a puzzle is a great way to go, because adults and kids of all ages can work together.

RRP : £14

  1. This looks so much fun - haven't done a puzzle in years - think it would be relaxing, but then i'd probably get frustrated too!

  5. Gosh, it looks really complicated and quite a challenge. I find jigsaws very calming for the children.
