What's Cooking At The Madhouse ? menu plan week 27


Into the final week of school. Monday and Tuesday is exam invigilating (and Pierre is doing his exams), Wednesday is a meeting, Thursday is the final day of classes so the few kids who do show up will be put in groups for a day of activities and Friday morning is the final meeting. Then we're into seven weeks of holidays. Time to chill out and have a big dejunk in the house. I have no other plans at the moment, apart from getting ready for our summer holiday which, this year, is a cruise around Iceland. Hopefully the volcanoes will stay quiet ! We get a couple of trips in Scotland on the way there and back too. Juliette is heading off to Prague with her boyfriend before that and is excitedly making lists of things to visit - I'm sure they'll have a fab time too. Can't wait to count the days off this week ! Here's our menu plan for the week. I'm dipping into the book What's For Dinner? by Romilla Arber this week.

What's Cooking At The Madhouse ? menu plan week 26


This week is our last week of lessons, so I've decided to be nice and let the kids watch DVDs in English. The week after is exams and meetings then that's this school year done - woohoo ! The girls went to Lyon (which is about 4 hours away by train) over the weekend to see Coldplay in concert. They had a good time apparently. Not much else going on here for now. Pierre is getting ready for his exams in a week's time. It's the end of an era ! Here's what's on the cards foodwise this week. Lasagne is being listed again as Pierre ate with his friends while watching the football on a big screen in the town centre a couple of times so I just had a sandwich rather than cooking just for me.

Degustabox June 2024 review


We're almost into the school holidays so what kinds of foodie products are we going to need? Tasty options for long breakfasts ? Check ! Lots of drinks to quench our thirst on hot, sunny days? Check ! Snack options for responding to the constant cries of "Mum, I'm hungry, have we got anything to eat?" Check, in both sweet and savoury formats ! Yep, it sounds like this month's Degustabox will have it all covered at the start of the holidays ! Here's what was in this month's box.


I love Aero chocolate bars, especially in mint or orange flavours, so I was intrigued to sample the new Aero Choco Hazelnut bar (RRP £1.35). You get the same bubbly, melt-in-your-mouth texture that leads into a smooth, creamy chocolatiness, with the extra richness of the hazelnut flavour. It's very tasty but I do still prefer the crisp, fresh flavour of the mint bars.

 

Jordans No Added Sugar Granola Apple & Cinnamon (RRP £3.60) is a tasty new breakfast option that hits just the right spot. The crunchy clusters contain no added sugar or sweeteners, just the natural sweetness of juicy sultanas. The apple and cinnamon additions are very tasty and really give a nice lift to the granola. I'll happily gobble up the whole bag ! Available at Waitrose, Ocado and Tesco.

Bonne Maman Chocolate & Orange Spread (RRP £2.90) is a tasty snack or breakfast option from the French jam-experts. Tasty spread on toast or bread, it can also be used in pancakes, on a digestive biscuit, brioche or ricecake. The richness of the flavour is very satisfying whatever you spread it on. Available at Waitrose, Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda and Morrisons.


Hippeas Chickpea Puff Snacks (RRP 2 x £1) are a tasty alternative to regular crisps, whose top ingredient is chickpeas. Each 22g serving (about a quarter of a bag) contains 2-3g of protein and under 92 calories. The two new intense flavours in the Flavour Blast range are Bohemian BBQ (very tasty) and Blazin' Hot (a bit too spicy for our tastes). They're vegan-friendly and gluten-free. Available at Morrisons, Ocado, Amazon and Hippeas.com


J2O Mocktails (RRP 3 x £1.29) are a lovely new range of drinks from J20 that will be perfect for quenching your thirst throughout the summer. Despite being non-alcoholic, they look and sound very grown-up so I'm sure they will be a big hit with tweens and teens. They come in a variety of delicious fruity flavours : Blackberry & Blueberry Martini, White Peach & Mango Daiquiri and Strawberry & Orange Blossom Mojito. Very tasty and refreshing. Available at Tesco, Asda, Morrisons and Sainsbury's.


Mentos Discovery 14 Flavours (RRP £1.80) contains 5 rolls of deliciously fruity, chewy sweets. I love Mentos so I was delighted to discover the range of 14 flavours, which includes passion fruit, lychee, blueberry, blackcurrant, lime, strawberry, raspberry, orange, lemon, watermelon, banana, grape, cherry and pineapple. They are vegan-friendly, very tasty and perfect for keeping in your pocket for chewing on the go ! Available at Morrisons and other supermarkets.

 

Brioche Pasquier Pitch Strawberry Filled Brioche (RRP £1.75) is this month's Product of the Month and it's Juliette's top pick. They are perfect for breakfast but the Madhouse kids prefer eating them as a mid-afternoon snack. They love the softness of the brioche, the sweet fruity filling and the fact that they are individually wrapped so they can be stuffed in a pocket as a snack on-the-go. They are free from preservatives, artificial colours and hydrogenated fats. Available from Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's and Morrisons.

Teapigs English Breakfast Tea (RRP £4.60 - other subscribers received Honeybush & Rooibos Tea) is the everyday blend reminiscent of a builder's brew. Drink with milk for the perfect refreshing cuppa. I'm not a tea-drinker but these do look and smell exceptionally fresh. Available at all major supermarkets as well as online at teapigs.co.uk


Tropicana Sparkling Tropical Twist (RRP £1.25 - other subscribers got Zesty Orange) is a great new way of getting the kids to drink fruit juice as it is made with real juice. Each can contains less than 60 calories and has no added sweeteners, just the fruity freshness from the tropical Costa Rican pineapple fields, so it is a healthier choice than many other sodas. Great for quenching your thirst in the summer sun. Available at WH Smith's, Shell and other independent retailers.

What's Cooking At The Madhouse ? menu plan week 25


I did all my running around last week - went to the bank, paid off the rest of the holiday and put in a trip to the insurance people who discovered that my claim had been filed without being paid so I'm glad I chased that up ! Into the last two weeks of lessons, followed by a week of exam invigilating and meetings. Juliette has got all her exams this week then she's ready to shoot off on holiday with her boyfriend. Sophie has sorted out next year's studies, moving into English and German, which she hasn't done for a few years so she'll have to revise the basics over the summer. The summer holidays are nearly here - phew ! Here's this week's menu plan.

Monday

What's Cooking At The Madhouse ? menu plan week 24


This week, I finally managed to sort out someone to come and finish the work on the roof, replacing all the ridge tiles. This is the final stage of the repairs from a big storm over a year ago so it's taken ages. I've paid the deposit so I'm just waiting for him to show up and do his stuff now. I have an appointment at the bank next week to free up some cash from my savings so that I can pay off the holiday and the roof repairs and Pierre's braces. This made me realise that I still haven't received the final payment from the insurance for the other roof repairs as far as I know - the invoice was taken in months ago so I need to chase that up too. School is winding down and the kids are already asking if we can play games or watch videos instead of the normal lessons. There's one week left of marking for the younger kids so they won't be very serious after that. Oh well, not long to go now. Here's what I have planned for food this week.

Degustabox May 2024 review


I always like the month of May because as well as being the month of bank holidays, it also usually signals the start of the warmer weather. While the temperatures may not be as high as in the middle of summer, the hours of sunshine invariably shoot up which is perfect for putting a spring in your step. I've switched over to my warmer weather clothes and have put the jumpers to the back of the cupboard which is also lovely. What would be in this month's Degustabox to welcome in the new season? 


The first thing I pulled out is bound to be a big hit here at The Madhouse: Batchelors Cook With Noodles (RRP £2.25). Pierre always loves noodles when he's making a quick lunch at home by himself because they are so simple to prepare and I also love adding lots of extra ingredients to make a more complex meal. They're great for using up leftover cooked meat (chicken, pork, beef - whatever you have) and you can add whatever veggies you have in the fridge (red and green peppers, onions, carrots, mangetout, courgette). They're a great way of getting the kids to gobble up their vegetables, especially if you hand out chopsticks for everyone to play/eat with - we always cheat and use the ones that stay attached at the top which are much easier to use. They're quick to prepare (just 3 minutes for the noodles) and each pack contains four blocks of noodles, complete with a seasoning sachet with each one. They work out as a really good value meal if you're counting the pennies too.

 

Frobishers Sicilian Lemonade (RRP £1.79) is a lovely thirst-quencher for the warmer weather. Sicilian lemon juice is blended with juniper and lemon oil for a lovely vibrant, sharp taste. The delicate bubbles that fizz on your tongue with each sip make the whole drinking experience even more pleasurable. Available in WH Smiths.

Kellogg's Rice Krispies (RRP £3.30) are this month's Product of the Month. They have been a family favourite for many years, including in our house, enjoyed either straight from the bowl covered in milk to release their snap, crackle and pop or covered in melted chocolate and golden syrup as rice krispie cakes. They always take me back to school cookery sessions when I was in primary school ! At the moment, Kellogg's is partnering with professional football clubs up and down the country to offer 7 to 14 year olds the chance to play in the footsteps of their heroes. With access to professional coaches, they will learn from the best. Sounds like a great activity during the long summer holidays.

 

Kettle Sweet Chilli & Sour Cream Crisps (RRP £2.40) are delicious. They have the fiery hit of chilli and paprika but the flavour is tamed down by the cooling creaminess of sour cream. It's a match made in heaven for wimps like me who can't handle the heat of regular chilli flavoured crisps ! Kettle chips are cooked in small batches and made using nothing artificial. Available in Waitrose, Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons and ASDA.

Maldon Kalahari Desert Salt (RRP £2.50) is a naturally coarse salt, selected by the seasoned experts at Maldon from the vast southern African desert. It's ideally suited to scattering on meat that is going to be grilled or barbecued to add a subtle flavour. Part of the new Merchants range, this is one of the finest salts from around the world.

 

Mr Porky Crispy Strips (RRP £1.25) are a unique snack from the Great Taste award-winning brand. They have the same taste as regular pork scratchings but they have the bite of crispy bacon rinds, so if you like your bacon crispy, these will be a big hit. They have a high protein content so they are perfect before or after a gym workout or to combat a mid-afternoon slump, but they can also be enjoyed with a drink as an evening snack.

Nescafe Azera Americano Instant Coffee (RRP £6.25) is a quick and simple way of creating a rich and velvety coffee, carefully crafted with a blend of Arabica and Robusta coffee beans. As we head into summer, you might prefer to try a Nescafe Azera iced coffee. For recipe inspiration, you can head over to their website or Instagram @nescafeazera


PhD Nutrition Milk Choc Hazelnut Smart Bar (RRP £2.50) is a great-tasting snack bar that is high in protein and low in sugar. A soft and squishy protein centre is coated in gooey caramel and protein crispies, offering the perfect combination of great taste and satisfying texture. Each bar contains 22g of protein, which will make gym bunnies like Pierre squeal in delight ! Available at PhD.com and amazon UK.


Sacla Char-Grilled Aubergine & Roasted Garlic Pesto (RRP £3.35) is a versatile veggie-friendly product that is great for keeping in the back of the cupboard in case you need to knock up a meat-free option at short notice. Made with aubergines ripened under the Mediterranean sunshine and sweet roasted, smoky garlic, it can be used in roasted vegetable tarts, coated on chicken skewers, stirred through dips or in  Pasta alla Norma, the Italian dish that inspired its creation. Available in Morrisons, Tesco, Sainsbury's and Waitrose, as well as Ocado and Sacla online stores.


Swizzels Squashies Strawberry & Cream Flavour Drumsticks (RRP £1.15) are a new product that we all loved, both for the soft and squishy texture and also the fruity flavour. Strawberries and cream is an iconic flavour of the very essence of summer so these are perfect for chewing on, even if it's raining ! If we do get some much needed sun though, at least they aren't made of chocolate so they won't melt. Win-win !


Very Lazy Jerk Paste (RRP £1.99) is a simple way of bringing the taste of the Caribbean to your kitchen. The fiery heat and flavour of Scotch bonnet chillis, allspice and black pepper will set your tongue on fire but at least you can judge how much to add to your dish, adding in some cream to combat the spiciness if you so desire. Perfect with chicken wings, vegetables and rice or for jazzing up the leftovers from a Sunday roast. The Madhouse kids have become slightly addicted to Jerk chicken sandwiches !

Book review : Better Safe Than Sorry - Mike Martin (Sgt Windflower Mysteries #14)

 

When life gets hectic and it feels like things are starting to spin out of control, I have the perfect solution for you : settle down in a comfy corner with a mug of hot chocolate and the latest adventures of Sgt Windflower. Whatever dark deeds are going on in Newfoundland, his level-headed way of thinking, combined with his deep love for his family, his enjoyment of tasty food and his links to his Cree culture, will reassure you that everything is under control with Winston in charge.


I have to admit, I was disappointed when Winston Windflower retired from the RCMP in one of the previous books and settled into a less dangerous role in his community. While he enjoyed having the opportunity to focus more of his time on his wife and children (Stella and Amelia Louise, now aged six and four) it seemed that there was something missing in his life and, when his young replacement Eddie Tizzard started to feel slightly overwhelmed and wanted to step back, who better to fill his boots and take up his former role in the RCMP? Why, Sgt Windflower of course! But only if his wife Sheila gave her approval. (Luckily for Sgt Windflower, and for us readers, he managed to convince her.)


Despite the setting in the sleepy backwater of Grand Bank, a big new crime spree has kicked off, evolving around a dangerous new drug called Green Monsters. As well as being a risk in the nearby high schools, these drugs seem to set off a serious of strange events. Winston has to deal with the wrong body showing up in a hearse, followed by another mysterious corpse. Warily, Windflower steps back into his role as the big-hearted Mountie, taking care of his Newfoundland community. I can't wait to see what he gets up to in the next book.


This is book 14 in the series and you can read my reviews of the rest of the series, as well as check out my recipes for some of Sgt Windflower's favourite foods, here on my blog. The book can be enjoyed as a stand-alone novel, but half of the fun is following Winston's progress through life.

What's Cooking At The Madhouse ? menu plan week 23


Another week done and dusted. Pierre got his braces put on on Monday morning and had to go back again in the afternoon because one of the links (I don't know what they're called) came off his tooth as soon as he got home. In the afternoon, he was tired so he went for a nap and when he woke up it had come off again. He was asleep, not even eating so I have no idea why it won't stick to his tooth. He's on an emergency appointment list now but we haven't heard back all week. He's managed to stick it in place with the protective gel so it doesn't annoy him but it's not doing anything. Nothing much else to report. The kids are being nightmares at work and have discovered the joy of hiding water pistols in their clothes and squirting them at people during lessons. I nabbed a couple of girls who were taken out of class and a couple more got caught in the corridors but there are more out there. They're selling them in town 3 for €1 so it's hardly surprising but a pain all the same. Only a few weeks to go ... breathe ! Here's this week's menu plan.
