I'm in my element at the moment because all of my childhood faves from the 70's and 80's are making a comeback ! After recently reviewing Spirograph, Mr Frosty and The Children of Green Knowe, it's time for another of my childhood staples to be rereleased : Roobarb ad Custard. As soon as the press release landed in my inbox, I had the theme tune on the brain and it's been in there ever since - De ner dener de ner dener de ner de ner de nerr… ! The theme tune is apparently acclaimed as one of the finest children’s TV title songs ever - I'd actually say the most annoying but it's impossible not to sing along !
But back to the dvd ... More than 40 years after making their debut on British TV screens, and over a decade since their return, green dog and pink cat Roobarb and Custard are bounding back into view again. The groundbreaking animated series and its sequel are being paired together for the first time ever on a DVD due to be released as Roobarb and Custard: The Complete Collection on 16 May 2016, courtesy of Simply Media.
That means you get the original 30 episodes from the 1974 series – the first fully animated television series to be made in the UK – as well as the 2005 Roobarb And Custard Too series, comprised of 39 episodes. Both come from the mind of original creator Bob Godfrey (Henry’s Cat - I remember that too !) and each feature the distinctive narration of British comedy legend Richard Briers (aww I loved him in The Good Life). Each of the two series features the antics of the green dog Roobarb and his outlandish schemes and hapless plans, seemingly forever foiled by his next-door nemesis, pink cat Custard.
The original 1970's episodes do look very dated but for adults who watched them first time around, it's a real trip down memory lane. Roobarb is so hyperactive that I'm sure he must have been overdosing on all those E-numbers that were in everything back then ! Pierre was instantly won over by the crazy antics and sheer silliness of the stories, so he didn't seem to notice the lack of high definition or computer wizardry. The second part of the dvd - the more recent episodes - are better quality but I actually missed the retro-vibe of the originals.
If you fancy a blast from the past, I have two copies of the DVD to give away to lucky Madhouse Family Reviews readers. Just fill in your entries in the rafflecopter widget below to go in the draw.
