Graco Fusio review

Buying a pushchair, pram or travel system is always a big decision as it always uses up a large chunk of the baby/toddler equipment budget. You don't want to get it wrong because you're unlikely to buy more than one, hopefully using it for any subsequent children you may have. This means that once you've got one, you tend to stick with it through thick and thin, faults and all, and don't really get to compare and contrast with other models.

So it's been really interesting this year, as a lucky Graco ambassador, to get the opportunity of trying out more than one top of the range pushchair. Our first taste of luxury was the Graco Symbio travel system, which we reviewed here. We're still using it and still loving it but Pierre is about to change childminder's (he's having his first trial session there this afternoon - finger's crossed !) and she needs a pushchair too. When the opportunity came up to try out a new product, I opted for the Graco Fusio, the latest addition to the Graco line.

If you think of the basic wishlist when buying a pushchair, it has all that (but to be honest, any big name pushchair worth its salt should anyway) - it's stable, comfortable, sturdy, the wheels run smoothly and it's easy to fold. It also looks very chic, either in the black/grey or black/red colouring.

But it also has a lot of little extra features that make you constantly go "oooh that's handy". Such as the straps for attaching your child which come apart so that you snap the waist and shoulder parts together at the same time as you buckle him in at the front. It doesn't sound particularly ingenious and at first, I thought it was annoying because you had an extra bit to fiddle with when doing up the buckles, but in practice, it means you don't have to try to find the straps stuffed under baby's bum or back or try to bend his arms into a contortionist's position to fit them through the arm straps. Add a tired grumpy toddler, a couple of bags of shopping, pouring rain and a winter coat into the mix and you'll soon see how much of a Godsend they are !

The Graco Fusio has kept the best bits of the Graco Symbio, such as the reversible seat which is a fabulous way of keeping in contact with your little one and has staved off many a burgeoning tantrum !

But it has also improved on others. One of the things I didn't like about the Symbio was the tiny basket underneath. While the storage basket on the Fusio isn't that much bigger, the split handle does allow you to hang a couple of shopping bags on it (although you obviously don't want to overdo it and make it tip over backwards. That's a good point actually - I'll have to try out the Hamster Buggy Bags (that we reviewed here) and see if they fit on the Fusio because they didn't fit on the Symbio.)

Another new feature is that once folded, it stands upright which is great for keeping it clean and for not taking up too much room, especially if you have to leave your pushchair in a hallway where people constantly need to get past. You can also twist the handles around to any position you choose and set the wheels to locked or swivel, depending on what you prefer.

I have to admit - when I saw the word "pramette", I didn't know what it meant but it's actually another really good feature. Graco explain : "This all-in-1 compact travel system can be used as a pramette which transforms at every step with your child. The pramette function on the Fusio allows the backrest of the pushchair to be reclined fully. When Fusio is flat, it becomes the perfect pram to enjoy your first stroll as a new family. The Fusio offers a number of options to suit your lifestyle. If you’d prefer you can add the Graco Go Carrycot – with soft and comfortable padding, so your little one can enjoy sleep undisturbed." The Fusio can also be used as a travel system with the Logico S HP car seat.

As Pierre is now 2-years-old, he'll just be using it as a pushchair and, as you can see, he loves it. When we get the really small fold-up pushchair out, he often struggles and doesn't want to be strapped in. With the Fusio, he's happy to sit in there for hours, even staying in there rather than a high chair when we called in to McDonald's, so it's presumably very comfortable.

Assembling it from the box was a breeze. It took Madhouse Daddy Mike literally seconds to fix on the four wheels without once looking at the instruction manual, then we were off. It's also very easy to fold down and is relatively compact.

I love all the little added extras that are thrown in, such as the newborn liner, apron, footmuff, basket and raincover, which make the whole experience even more enjoyable. Given the weather this summer, the rain cover in particular came in very handy, but I'll definitely be trying out the footmuff as the weather gets colder too.

I always like to give a balanced review with positives and negatives but nothing springs to mind that I actually didn't like for this one.

You can see a demonstration video of the Fusio here.

And make sure you head over to the Graco website here and upload some photos for your chance to win either a Graco Sybio or a Graco Fusio.

Graco Junior Maxi Plus Disney Princesses Car Seat

After being chosen as a Graco ambassador earlier in the year, I was told to have a look around on the Graco website and choose the item I'd like to receive to review. Wow, talk about a difficult decision to make ! We've already received the Graco Nautilus 3-in-1 car seat and the Graco Symbio pushchair, both of which are in constant use and which the Madhouse kids absolutely love. (Click through for the reviews.)

For safety reasons, I decided to go for another car seat. Three years ago, we had a car crash. While nobody was hurt, the car was a write-off and I've been worried about the car seat ever since. I remember reading that as soon as a car seat has been involved in a crash, you should change it because it may have been damaged by the impact and no longer be safe. But Mike the Madhouse Daddy maintained that, as it was totally on the opposite side of the car to the point of impact, it'd be fine. Hmmm.

Well, this was the perfect opportunity to ditch the old car seat and get a brand spanking new one. The problem is, the Graco Nautilus car seat was just too popular ! 5-year-old Juliette has claimed it as her own, because she absolutely loves how comfortable it is and all the secret pockets for hiding toys and sweets and goodness knows what other treasures in ! There was no way I was going to convince her to give that up, but I wasn't sure we could fit two big similar car seats on the back seat and still leave space for big sister Sophie in the middle.

But Graco had a car seat in their collection that made Juliette squeal and say OK OK give the Nautilus to Pierre, I want THAT one ! What made her change her mind ? Well, it's bright pink and it has the Disney Princesses all over it ! (There are also two boys' versions, in red and blue with Disney Cars or light and dark blue with Disney Toy Story on them, so nobody misses out.)

This Junior Maxi Plus car seat is group 2/3 so it's suitable for children with a weight between 15 - 36 kg. The height adjustable head support grows with the child, which is pretty standard on car seats, but the arm rests are also height adjustable to give better back support and optimum comfort. I'm over the moon to find some of the same features that I love on the Graco Nautilus car seat - particularly the integrated seat belt guide in the headrest, designed to always ensure the correct position of the seat belt, and which makes it dead easy to strap Juliette in because the clip is always at hand and I don't have to scrabble about trying to find it somewhere in the back of the car. Believe me, with three kids to get strapped in, the little convenient added extras are a real time and sanity saver !

I asked Juliette what she thought and she jumped around the room saying "I love it, it's a real Princess seat and I'm a Princess !". I've noticed that when we are out and about, she spends hours sucking her thumb and gazing out of the window at the countryside whizzing past the window (which means less squabbling with her sister - yay !!). I've come to the conclusion that she can actually see out much better than in the more enclosed Graco Nautilus so it's great for slightly older kids. The fact that it uses the normal car seat belt rather than a harness also means that she can now strap herself into the car seat all by herself - again, an added bonus as far as I'm concerned !
There are other added little features that come in handy, like the two retractable cup holders and the removable and washable cover. It also has a removable backrest so it can convert into a group 3 booster seat. Although, by then, I get the feeling the pink colour and princess design will be long outgrown ! In the meantime, it's the perfect car seat that any little girl could dream of !

Graco Nautilus Group 1-2-3 Car Seat - Group 2 (Juliette's review)

Well, after my review as a Mum and Sophie's review in group 3 position, it's over to 5-year-old Juliette to review the Graco Nautilus in group 2 position. Ready Juliette ?

-*squeeeeeealllllll* My turn, my turn, my turn ... can I sit in it now Mum ? Can I ? Can I ? Can we go out for a drive ? C'mon Mum, can we ? Can we ?

- OK Juliette, calm down a bit ! I take it you like the new car seat then ?

- Yesssss, it's really really good and it's my turn. Oww it's heavy. Come on Mum, I need you to help me put it in the car.

Well, very slight problem - Juliette is right on the limit between group 1 and group 2 so I couldn't really decide which position to use. The instruction booklet says that it's safest to use the harness for as long as possible and she still just about fits in it with the harness comfortably so that's what we're going with at the moment. When we get the thicker winter clothes out though, we'll need to remove the harness and strap her in with the car seatbelt. I gave that a go too and she's still really securely and comfortably attached, thanks to the nifty seatbelt guide.

- Mummy ? Mummy ? MUMMY ?! Can I have a drink ? Oh no, it's alright Mum, I've got one here in my sippy cup. Can I have a sweet ? Oooh I've got some of those too ! And some colouring pencils - and wow, I've got a little colouring book and a notepad waiting for me in my secret stash pockets on the side of my seat. Oooh I can hide all my secret toys and sweets and treasure in there and Sophie and Pierre won't even know they're in there.

*snoooooooooore* *snufffly snuffle* Zzzzzzzzzzzzz ...

A few miles on, the excitement has proved too much and Juliette has fallen asleep. The supportive headrest keeps her sitting comfortably upright in her seat, much to the delight of big sister Sophie who sits in the middle and usually ends up having to put up with a snoring, dribbling, sweaty little sister 's head on her shoulder ! Juliette wakes up in a much better mood than after her usual mid-journey snooze because she hasn't got neckache or a bump on the head after being woken up by her head ricocheting off the window !

Conclusion : Two happy, comfortable, well-rested sisters. Lots of handy little pockets that were carefully filled in advance with secret treats and surprises to avoid the inevitable "I'm bored" whining. Huge smiles all round - especially on Mum and Dad's faces !

Graco Nautilus Group 1-2-3 Car Seat - Group 3 (Sophie's review)

Handing over the reviewing reigns to guest blogger of the day, 9-year-old Sophie, who has been testing out the funky Graco Nautilus in group 3 position today.

***************************************************

First of all, it was very funny because Mum couldn't work out how to fit the booster seat in the car. She was trying to fit the big enormous car seat strap and buckle through a tiny slot at the back of the seat and it wouldn't fit. Then she realised that there was an extra small strap with a buckle in a little bag with the instruction manual that she'd forgotten about ! Once she'd found that, it was really easy though and she just had to adjust the seatbelt strap a little bit so that it fitted properly on my shoulder and then we were ready to go.

I thought it was really comfortable and there was loads of room to sit it in. Normally I'm a bit squashed in my other booster seat but not in this one, it's really big like an aeroplane seat. Also if we went around the corners really really fast, the car seat didn't move at all.

What is really really good is the cup holder. Mum doesn't like us drinking in the car because we always have to stop for a toilet stop so I used it to store all my stuff instead - I could put my mp3 player, lip balm and Mum lent me her phone so that I could play on the games because I kept saying I was bored. Oh and a pack of sweets. And that was before I even noticed the two other pockets on the sides for keeping even more stuff. Mum put in a sick bag, my Sea-Bands, a packet of wipes and a packet of tissues but there was still loads of space for my Nintendo DS Lite and all my games. I normally have to put things on the floor and then get told off because I tread on them when I get out of the car so I really like the little secret hiding places for my things.

I really like the Nautilus seat because it's really comfortable, it looks really grown up, I'm not all squashed in and the seatbelt didn't cut into my neck like it usually does. And it's funny because we call it the Naughty Seat because that sounds like Nautilus !

(Note from Mum - spelling corrections courtesy of me ! And we didn't drive around any corners really really fast, honestly !)

***************************************************

Well there you have it ! Out of the mouths of babes ... ! Next up will be Juliette, reviewing the group 2 position, but I'll have to type on her behalf ! (I might actually be able to censor that one then !!)

Graco Nautilus group 1 - 2 - 3 car seat (Mum's review)

I recently applied to test one of Graco's new 3-in-1 Nautilus car seats and was over the moon to be selected as one of the 25 mummy-blogger reviewers. I hastily started doing my research online to see how it all worked and I'm really impressed with how versatile it is.

The whole idea is that it's a group 1 - 2 - 3 car seat that can be adapted to grow with your child so it will last from age 9 months right up to 11 years. That makes it really economical, as well as environmentally-friendly because you'll only need to buy one seat instead of three, thereby reducing landfill but also the resources needed to make them in the first place. But above all, it makes it a great time-saver, and that is probably the biggest advantage to parents because time is such a precious commodity when you have kids ! No more traipsing around the baby shops trying to decide which new car seat to buy now that your little one has moved on to the next weight/age range, not having a clue which models are best because so many new ones have been brought out since the last time you looked - one seat will see you through from toddlerhood to grumpy pre-teen !

The car seat arrives in a huge box (which can be recycled as a playhouse to keep the kids amused while you get to grips with it !) and feels quite weighty (8.86 Kg) but to me that's a good thing because it's reassuringly sturdy. It is quite large (50cm wide, 48cm long, 68/88cm high) compared to some other car seats, so if you have a small car, you might want to try it out at the shop to check it will fit on the back seat, especially if you have other car seats to fit in. We have a Renault Scenic so there was no problem at all.

The seat arrives in partly dismantled group 1 position so the first thing I did was sit down with the instruction book to work out how to change positions for the different groups. I then assembled it in group 1 position (for weight 9-18kg), which is what 1-year-old Pierre will be using, then took the built-in harness off for group 2 (15-36kg), which is ideal for 5-year-old Juliette and finally, took the whole back support off leaving just the booster seat for group 3 (22-36kg) which is perfect for 9-year-old Sophie. It was a bit fiddly at times working out which bits to push through which holes to disassemble it but this was a first attempt and it's unlikely that you'll actually need to switch through all three group positions within minutes as I did to roadtest it so it was a bit of an unfair test. The clicks when it fits into each new position are reassuring loud so you can tell it is a really robust, solidly-built piece of equipment.

The girls absolutely love it - comfort-wise, it's unbeatable and it looks amazingly posh. They call it the aeroplane seat (when they're not calling it the Naughty seat !). I'm very impressed with the clever little extras like the cupholder and the storage compartments on each side of the seat - it's so parent-friendly and child-friendly. (But more about that when the kids write their own guest-blogger reviews - watch this space !) I'm particularly impressed at how well-received it was by Sophie because, even if UK law states that children must be seated in a car seat or booster seat until they are 12 years of age, any parent of tweens knows that they often complain and think they are too old to do so.

When I saw that this was a car seat that covered the three age groups, I expected it to be really good for one group and acceptable for the two others, unconvinced that you could genuinely find a really high-quality car seat that would be so versatile. However, Graco have proved me wrong - even the group 3 booster seat is better than any of the others I've seen or used, because it is so comfortable, robust and offers the handy little gadgets like the cup holder that I've never seen on any other models. As a parent of three kids, one from each age group, I've been able to give it a thorough testing in all three set-ups but for day-to-day use, it will be reserved principally for one child, probably Pierre, and we won't be constantly adapting it from one position to the others. However, if you are a grandparent or a childminder, it's fantastic to be able to buy one car seat to cover all options, from baby right through to tweens.

I've mentioned the comfort and the handy built-in storage spaces but the most important thing is the safety aspect. As you'd expect from a company as serious and trusted as Graco, this is a high quality piece of safety equipment, offering side impact protection and a lock-off mechanism. The baby harness is brilliant because Pierre has not managed to undo the clasps once, however much he tries, and even Juliette, who is the master (or should that be mistress ?) of unbuckling herself mid-drive, hasn't managed to do so - especially as she has her toys and colouring pencils to hand in the cupholder so she's less inclined to get bored and try to escape ! The head rest also encourages uninterrupted sleep because it protects and supports your sleepy little one's head so they won't wake up because their head has just bounced off the window when you go round a particularly tight bend in the road ! The head support and recline handle are both really easy to adjust one-handed which is great for parents who constantly seem to be juggling a million baby and child-related objects ! And the biggest parent-friendly element has to be the fact that the cover comes right off and is machine washable - as a parent of kids who suffer from travel sickness, I can tell you how much you will appreciate that at times !

So it's great for kids, great for parents, great for safety, great for your pocket and for reducing landfill ... and it looks really funky too ! What more could we possibly ask for ?!
