Molar TongueDetox

When I was a student, one of my housemates always used to crack me up when she crawled out of bed in the morning, particularly after an alcohol-fuelled night out. She'd cry "Yuck, my mouth feels like the bottom of a parrot's cage" or "my tongue feels like it's been up a badger's bum" ! Ewwww ! But to some extent, I'm sure we've all felt like that at some point ! Well, help is at hand - you can now buy a TongueDetox tool.

This has to be one of the strangest things I've been sent to review ! It's basically a piece of plastic that has been bent into a U-shape . You hold the two ends and drag it across your tongue to get rid of all the gunk ! Hmmm nice ! According to the manufacturers, "With their uneven surface, tongues are a playground for bacteria and food remnant build up, and the primary contributor to bad breath. [...] TongueDetox is a unique two handled tongue cleanser which gets to grips with toxic tongues in seconds."

This sounded like another new-agey type of cleansing ritual that has been introduced recently, along the lines of colonic irrigation or those candles you stick in your ears to get all the wax out ! Although it certainly works, I wasn't entirely convinced it is an essential part of oral hygiene. However, it turns out that there is a long tradition of tongue scraping in India and Asia and the TongueDetox is based on these traditional designs - an Indian designer actually collaborated on its key features. Even more convincing is the fact that it features on the Dentalshop website, where they clearly state that "Dentists and Hygienists recommend the products featured on this website. Each category lists only those products regularly supplied to dental practices."

So, apart from visibly scraping off the gunk that accumulates on your tongue, what does it actually do ? The packaging says that it removes the coating of plaque-forming bacteria and food debris on the tongue, thereby helping to prevent bad breath and plaque formation on teeth, as well as reviving taste buds.

It has a subtle minty toothpaste taste that leaves your mouth feeling fresh and clean and it does nicely complement toothbrushing to give an all-round feeling of cleanliness. It's extremely simple to use, although I have to admit, I don't think I'd keep it in my handbag or desk drawer for a quick scrape during the day, as they suggest !
